I've noticed that snow quickly melts and falls off all the roofs of the new Harmony flats in Twickenham Road. Are they properly insulated for heat loss?JL.

When I was growing up our house never had snow on the roof like everyone elses because my dad was paranoid about burst pipes and he always left the loft hatch oopen and usually placed a paraffin fire just below to allow the heat up into the loft to keep the pipes warm. Having since heard about loft insulation and losing heat through the loft I began to think dad must have been a bit daft - however, over the weekend on some satellite channel or the other I saw Tommy Walsh from Ground Force suggesting that people should do exactly what dad did which is leave the loft hatch open for heat to rise into the loft and help protect the pipes so, dad wasn't such a dafty after all and we never had snow on our roof

Doesn't sound like it.I think one of the best things you can do is to lay flooring in your loft.
