So far I've done two stints just inside the door at Morrisons..and what a rewarding experience it has been. Others colleagues from the local British Branch have done stints too.I was a little self conscious at first putting the tray around my neck and taking up position but within seconds a familiar face said hello (top bridge player from The Island) and placed the first coin in my colourful collecting box.One hears many commentators knocking Brentford and Brentford people but I must say I've been privileged to have met and chatted to a steady stream of great hearted people. I enjoy pinning the poppy to everyone's lapel or jumper or scarf..and thanks to the chap who told me that the green bit should be positioned at the 11 o'clock mark.Maybe just one in ten shoppers stop to buy a poppy, (or metal badge, or wristband) and they come from all age groups, backgrounds and nationalities...the schoolchildren, the Somalian father, the local Colonel, the Canalboat celebrities, Chiswick computer repair wizards, lovely Irish grannies, dolly birds, and tubby luvvies, Hounslow Homes chaps, Mums and dads, and many more. There may be scalleywags in Brentford (and I witnessed a shoplifter running out with a basket full of meats) but believe me..there's a whole big strata of lovely people out there..and being a poppy seller gives one a marvellous opportunity to meet so many of them.See you there later this afternoon!
