UK facing a 20 Million Pound Garlic Tax Bill!!!

This ridiculous tax bill imposed upon us by the European Commission is the result of an inquiry by! wait for it staff from OLAF don't laugh it's the EU's Anti Fraud Unit(would they not be better suited in investigating the EU's expenditure for the last 17 years which has never ever officially been signed off.Apparently we have to pay this fine or once again face legal action within 2 months because between 2005-6 we bought Fresh Garlic from China and somehow it was designated Frozen which is taxed at a lower rate. Is it not about time we gave the thumbs down sign to the European Commission and took our own destiny once again into our own hands.

I really have no objections to trading with any European country however only on Free Trade Terms. We pay enough taxes from our own government we do not need nor want them imposed from elsewhere that is my only arguement.

Genius - but not, perhaps, the complete answer. As Dawn has informed us, the UK cannot trade outside the EU. Its now illegal apparently. So we'd need to also be able to grow spring rolls, tortillas and bombay duck. And my veg plot ain't big enough for all that...

What point have I turned around? You stated that the UK is not permitted to trade with countries outside of the EU, your exact words. You further stated that you want us to 'trade worldwide as we used to'. So I voiced my surprise at that claim. That is hardly "turning the point around". So, when exactly did the UK stop trading outside of the EU? We should be told. There are a few things that will get more difficult to obtain...

You so remind me of my Father!!!!You have turned the point around to suit yourself. I think that we as a nation should trade with whom ever we get the best bargain from. Lets hope China does put money into our infrastructure it can only make us financially stronger to the rest of world markets and will give us a very good kick start back onto the road to recovery.

Incidentally we do not receive monies back from our contributions, Maggie Thatcher came to an agreement that we would receive back 2 thirds of our yearly contribution to the EU. Wouldn't you know it both Tony Blair and Gordon Brown gave it back and said that we didn't need it.

The European Fraud Squad state that it was 2005-6 have a look at yesterdays Daily Telegraph.You miss the point entirely are we not permitted to trade with countries outside of the EU after all I much prefer fresh produce at a cheaper price then frozen EU produce at a dearer price.I am really quite shocked at how much we are controlled by Europe, I was under the impression that we voted in our Parliament to do what was best for the UK obviously I am wrong in that assumption, what I do expect is that we maintain our sovereignty and trade worldwide as we used to, we have a Free Trade Treaty to do so.

Surely 'this took place in 05/06' and 'this allegedly is a seen as a fraud'.  Not 'this allegedly took place in 05/06' - unless you are uncertain of the year.Surely the fraud unit (sic) is required to look at issues that involve EU countries - that is its 'backyard'. So it is looking within its own backyard.Surely I'm 'taking a pop' at your questionable logic, not at you per se. Although it is also true that questionable logic has been demonstrated on other threads... Surely EU money is spent on programmes within the UK as well as programmes in other countries. Or are you absolutely certain that no EU gets spend on UK infrastructure programmes?(Dawn, we get it, you do not like the euro, the EU or the european politicians. But really, the daily mail / express do a sterling job of slagging these off - you don't need to copy and paste their thinking onto this forum.)

Absolutely not! this allegedly took place between 2005-6 if this is so then why on earth has it taken so long to find out. As for the Fraud Unit it should look into it's own backyard before making ridiculous accusations like this, you surprise me greatly by taking a pop at me when you will not discuss any other threads that are equally important.Will you tell me exactly what benefits either you or I get from paying so much into the European Commission because as far as I am concerned the only thing that I can see is the tax bill that I pay on a yearly basis. Does this money going to our infrastructure, no bloody way it goes toward the 18.5 Billion Pounds that we pay to the Commission.Competitive rates are what makes a country,not one currency.

Let me see if I understand your point.You say it is wrong that one country, the UK, who claimed they were importing low tax goods, are now taxed correctly for the goods they imported. You are saying this correction is wrong. You are further implying that the EU body responsible for identifying and addressing such wrong claims - is itself wrong. You want it to only look at certain sort of errors or frauds. Probably anything carried out by countries other than the UK.Because the of these things (correcting a false tax and the fact that the fraud unit dared investigate anything british) you think the UK should leave the EU.Is that the message?
