'Old housewife's tips'

Do you have any family tips to share?  I have told the family my Mothers gems, which include'How do you tell a Cox apple is ripe?' shake the apple and the pips rattle.'How do you stone a Victoria plum so that it comes away from the flesh?' roll the whole fruit around in your fingers and you can feel the stone coming away.Sorry to distract from the serious business of ruling Europe.... :-)

Yes Sarah,the 'halcyon days'of the 70's,keg beer,terrible fashion,football hooliganism,industrial strife,double figure inflation,cabbage boiled for a fortnight and England under achieving at football ;-).

Never listen or respond to threads from ranting people with clear agendas who think its their personal mission to post, reply to their own posts and then post again. Especially when the posts are long, rambling and frequently incoherent. My great grand mother always said that the trouble with these social media forums is that they get hijacked by nutters and responding only encourages them. She was a wise woman - well ahead of her time.

When making shortcrust pastry I always use S.R. flour, butter or margarine and always add an egg, when you rub the fat in leave it while it is still quite coarse it will make for flakier pastry. (Tip from my Mum)

When she still sewed, my mother was a very exacting seamstress, and taught me to examine clothing before buying to ensure that all seams and hems were straight and sound, and to spot flaws like mismatched patterns, snags, faulty stitching, etc. For better or for worse, her standards - now mine - are so exacting that I often leave the shops empty-handed.
