Nadine Dorries MP mad, bad and dangerous?
Quite a few things about this government get my goat, but this woman practically reduces me to incredulity. This lunatic known as 'Mad Nad' for good reason, under the 10 minute rule has managed to get a bill through to its second reading in the House that girls, and only girls, are taught "the benefits of abstinence from sexual activity" at school. This bill links up with the anti-abortion legislation that this nutcase and her sympathisers have been banging on about. A reporter in the "i" writes that "It's part of the cultural backlash against female sexual freedom that incorporates attacks on abortion, contraception and sexual education across Britain and the U.S., where at least one candidate in favour of outlawing contraception is considered a serious contender in the Republican race". The article goes on to say that although this bill is unlikely to pass into law this time it is "sinister because the effect of proposals like this is that they move the boundaries of what is considered culturally acceptable. They make abstinence education for girls a serious topic for political debate rather than a reactionary, misogynist affront to half a century's worth of struggle by women's rights campaigners around the globe. The fact this venal little piece of legislative indoctrination is supposed to apply to girls only betrays the prejudices of the conservative cultural lobby, large parts of which still believe that decent women are incapable of sexual agency".This only leads me to the conclusion that anyone who wants to be an M.P. should submit themselves for a psychological review. It's bad enough they have crackpots wanting to get elected across the pond and there was I thinking we were far too sensible to listen to this "moral tubthumping of the Christian right", apprarently not.
