I just started to read Pat Buckingham's piece on Mrs Bradley's 'Myteries' on the home page, it's riddled with typos!Doesn't any check this stuff?

The weird thing is that for many years now books have been made up from the author's own word-processing file, where a simple spell-check should eliminate 90%+ of typos.

It's amazing the number of popular books that contain loads of daft typos. It does make you wonder - you only have to read it once yourself to spot them.Some people are obviously getting paid for nothing in many walks of life, from the BBC site content checkers down to the humble author's proofreader.Summary: You don't have to any good be at it to get a job as a proofreader. Perhaps this is why you see all the marketing ads in the weekend papers for proofreading courses.Maybe people respond and pay the fee and end up in the proofreading industry - so let's blame them. The fools.
