Unwanted telephone calls

Has anyone out there managed to successfully bar these damned recorded telephone message things?  I must receive about 10 a day and I have just had my first for today and they go on until about 8.00p.m. mostly about PPI always something to do with banks.  I don't listen to the messages I just hang up but, I have nearly killed myself on more than one occasion either jumping out of the bath or running down stairs or whatever only to be enfuriated by these unsolicited calls.  I would really like to get my hands on whoever is responsible.  I was at my niece's house the other week and her husband went onto some website or other which is supposed to bar these calls but since then I could swear I'm actually receiving more of them.  They are driving me nuts!If anyone has successfully barred these calls please let me know how.

My policy now is not to answer but let the answer phone do the work. If somebody really wants to speak to me then they normally have the nouse to leave a message. So no longer do I have to rush at the phone.The phone screen tells me that 90% of calls are from overseas. I used to have a personal alarm, sadly now defunct. The offering of its screech on the phone tended to stop calls for months.I do wish that BT would provide number ID for foreign calls. BT must get an enormous number of complaints these days. The Preference service only works on inland calls, but certainly has made a difference.

I got a call on Wednesday from someone wanting to represent me in a PPI claim (something I have never bought, however persistent the salesman); I just said 'bugger off' and hung up. My husband looked very startled. I also blocked the number, which my phone (a Panasonic portable) allows me to do, though I don't suppose that works when the number is withheld.

You can go on a preference site to try and stop the calls, I agree they drive you nuts! We did this and for a long time it worked then the bloody things started to creep back again, we thought perhaps we should re-register on the barring site but it said we were already registerd but frankly it doesn't work too well now. If I get asked to do one more 'customer survey' that pans out to be nothing of the sort I shall murder someone, as it is I content myself with being quite shirty to whoever is silly enough to ring our number.

Since my original posting I have so far received 3 calls already and yes I was upstairs and had to break my neck running to answer only to told "this is an urgent message - Natwest" that's as far as I got before screaming and hanging up. GRRRRRR

It will be interesting to hear what advice you are given, Bernadette.  We very occasionally get these calls - I normally get texts telling me I should claim ££££££££££ in compensation, on my mobile.  When the phone goes one normally rushes to answer it wherever you are!  Years ago, in the days before computer generated calls, we used to get nuisance calls often with the person breathing on the other end. There was nothing which could be done at that time to trace and track down the critter, but I know this is different these days.
