Cats are potentially poisinous...

I had never heard of toxoplasma before reading about it in the Independent.Any one,or all of those numerous moggies that come into your garden could be carriers of this disturbing condition that can become very serious and life threatening.I think those who are pregnant and who have poor immunity systems are most at risk but with many people they have the condition but few symptoms.Scary.

My cousin has had toxoplasmosis in his blood now for 14 years, it is very rare in men and he was actually poisioned abroad by a korean business rival (this is not an uncommon trait in far eastern commerce even today!)In the main, he is fine albeit less energetic than he was but it has led to liver and kidney issues.It is found in cat faeces but cats are rather clean about littering usually burying deposits. Dogs actually carry far more harmful bactreri some of which can blind and seriously damage children and adults. Unlike cats dogs are regulars in public places and is the main reason why dog fouling bye laws exist.Most owners nowadays are very good at keeping this under control.The biggest current risk is from the deposits of Foxes and one should clear anything found where children may play

Cats are NOT poisonous. Toxoplasmosis is a disease that cats can carry in their faeces as dogs carry toxacara canis, the biggest threat is to pregnant women. If they have to clear litter trays or do gardening in an area where cats go then they should always wear gloves and be very particular about hand washing and general hygiene. All cats - and dogs should be regularly wormed, there really is no need for panic, but most pet owners - responsible ones at least, will know all this. Trust me the benefits from owning animals far outweighs any daft scare stories, all that is required is that common sense is used and that hand hygiene is a priority as it should be anyway.
