Local health clubs

Any recommendations for a local gym?  It was a complete shock to find the Fitness centre at Isleworth is £49 a month.  I had a leaflet through my door tonight for a free 5 day trial at Topnotch, do you know of any other free trials so I can check out other gyms?I like the idea of Park run http://www.parkrun.org.uk/gunnersbury/and especially the "Every week we grab a post parkrun coffee at the Gunnersbury Park cafe - please come and join us."  ...   ...   that bit I could manage! :-)

Oh well, I thought I would need some catching up before committing ‘serious’ money for serious gym exercise.This was reinforced in Kingston today by a salesperson for Virgin Active who answered my one question and couldn't wait to ignore me (she completely forgot I was still standing there) in favour of some 20somethings who she dived at asking if they had been to look around the gym…  I would probably have popped upstairs to take a look...I did jog a bit on the tow path near Kew today (without falling over)  :-)

I can second that recommendation for Fran Silver - he used to train at Brentford Fountain and I was impressed.And I can recommend Brentford Fountain. Obviously it's not like a private club but it has a well equipped gym, good classes etc. I've tried Topnotch and been a member at Esporta and others over the years, and I think the the leisure centre compares well.Its one big disadvantage is the showers. They installed "water saving" ones a couple of years ago which provide so little water flow that they are practically unusable. So I always shower at home - thus saving their water :-(

Sarah, the parks and streets are free - forget Gyms and their dodgy contracts, get a bike or map out a couple of local routes that will take about 30 - 45 minutes to walk briskly and you'll get just as good results if not better.

I'd go for Topnotch.They are offering membership at £19.95 a month at the mo.The council run gyms are poorly managed (outsourced) and quite expensive now.Also, my son does a fair amount of personal training there. Ask for Fran, or call him on 07931 168 518. He can let you know all the details and discuss in detail what you want to achieve. He is well qualified and very knowledgeable about  different training techniques, diet and so on.Good luck!

Although I've not run at the Gunnersbury Parkrun I have taken part in the Old Deer Park and Richmond Park events.These are really well organised and a lot of fun.  A good excuse to get out and running on a Saturday morning!There is no fee (registration or event) and you just need to turn up with your barcode to run at any of the hundreds of locations.
