Rescue of Toddler in Thames at Isleworth...

Not on the news section here as yet.Presume it happened at the parking area in Church St adjacent to the London Apprentice where the railing is pretty minimal and people often feed the birds/ducks/swans...Without judging this event I must admit that as I get older I am more twitchy about how parents tend their small children, whether at road junctions, in playgrounds or by water hazzards. Perhaps we were too protective when our children were that age but I do cringe sometimes when I see potential danger, that parents close by do not. Again just a view and not a judgement on todays event which hopefully had a safe outcome.......

Danger stranger? Never mentioned at my schools.When I was 12 me and a mate saved up our pocket money and bought a Railway Rover ticket for the summer holidays,1971.It was a ticket which entitled the holder to railway travel all over the north west and up to the lakes for a month.We used to arrive back at Preston station about 10.30 at night and my mate's dad would take me home.Had some great times doing that.I remember the single fags Iain and the packets of 5 Park Drive.Saturday and after school jobs in shops and a hotel kitchen from 12 years old.When I left school,I was already ready for work.My school work didn't suffer and I learned that you don't get owt for nowt.

You scamp you, don't you remember the 'danger stranger' lessons in schools which put you on your guard. Can't say that anything untoward with railways lines etc. was in my experience, but I do remember the long days out on bikes going up to Chiswick House and Gunnersbury Park. Not to mention long summer days at the Chiswick Open Air Pool for 4d! Or skating at Richmond Ice Rink on Saturday mornings and Sunday afternoons.

There is a narrow wall that juts out into the water before the first lock gate at Richmond Lock.  At low tide, when the gates are down, the current beneath that wall is horrendous.  Nobody who fell into the water there would have a prayer.  I used to stand on that wall and fish!It makes me wonder how some of us ever made it to adulthood.

Hmm...not sure I was taught too much about safety but was given freedom to roam as a child and to do sometimes pretty dangerous things at the age of 8 involving water, railway lines and bonfires, not to mention buying single cigarettes from the local newsagent when I was 10... no questions asked. Its an age thing Vanessa..........

What is odd Ian is that the poor little blighters aren't allowed out to play much for this irrational fear of weirdos ready to carry them off. Yet, I cannot square that with the amount of parents I see busy texting or yapping on the 'phone while walking their offspring to school not paying the slightest attention to them on roads etc. I don;t think we were too protective but we did take time and effort to teach kids about safety, but then we didn't have bloody mobiles to distract us.
