Interesting Local By-Election Result
From Ashfield, which I am reliably advised in somewhere up north:Lib Dem 831 (65%)Labour 227Ind 221What is particularly noteworthy about this vote is that in spite of this being such a one-sided contest this was actually a Lib Dem gain from Labour! There was no Conservative candidate in the field, however in 2010 the Conservatives and Lib Dems between them only managed 45.2% of the vote. What this demonstrates is that local factors can overcome national trends in these contests where people are not bombarded with "news" from the big parties by the national media as they are whenever there is a general election taking place. It also tells us that there is no deep passion for Labour amongst voters and that its current lead in the opinion polls has been achieved largely by default, by virtue of popular dissatisfaction with the coalition government.Hounslow Lib Dems, small parties and aspiring indies please take note.
