LITTER!

Is anyone else noticing an increase in the amount of litter on the streets in Isleworth recently? The bottom of Linkfield Road is becoming an absolute disgrace - a difference to the streets near Chiswick High Road, which seem to constantly have a street cleaning machine buzzing around them! We all live in the same Borough - therefore we should all receive the same treatment!

I usually report such problems on the FixMyStreet site:http://www.fixmystreet.com/I reported the regular tipping of rubbish outside the shops in Twickenham Road/Linkfield Road. The Council pasted warning notices on the bags before removing them.There is also a problem of tipping on the grassed area between Fearney Meade Way and Mill Plat opposite the shops. I believe this is "maintained" by Notting Hill Housing.JL

Hi Julie, please don't withhold your council tax - the council's council tax collection regime is on a hair trigger these days.There are serious ongoing collection and cleaning issues along Twickenham Road and on Linkfield Road and this has been the case for several months - I know because I have also been reporting problems with dumped rubbish, stray black/green bags and litter (especially after the weekly collection).To be fair the Counsil's response to my reports has improved over that time (from about 5 days down to about 24 hours) but fresh grot has been arriving almost daily.  That means the response desperately needs escalating to enforcement to break the habits of an anti-social few - there is no sign of that as yet but I think that will be necessary.I generally report via twitter @lbofhounslow and the team will acknowledge each one (except when I do lots) and they do turn up.  environmentcomplaints@hounslow.gov.uk also works quite well.  If you copy me in @syonward or theo.dennison@hounslow.gov.uk I would be happy to chase your reports up too.And if you would like to meet on site and walk through your worst grotspots feel free to call me on 07950 468 361 anytime

Ok, advice please! I have twice received no reply from Hounslow about the state of Linkfield Road at the south end. I am now entertaining myself by collecting the litter in a black bag prior to leaving it at the council offices. Does anyone else have any ideas on how to get a response from this authority - short, of course, of withholding my monthly payment to them which I am sure would get an immediate reaction?

I have complained - again - to LBH and have again received no reply. This makes me really cross, as to reiterate Chiswick seems to get a lot more attention to its streets than poor old Isleworth!

I have to agree that a couple of high profile prosecutions often concentrates the minds of would be transgressors. But this also depends on witnesses being prepared to give evidence in court - which they often refuse to do.

I don't get that Phil - if a critter is caught then why are they not given a fine plus admin costs and expenses?A street camera has appeared along Northumberland Avenue and the road has quickly changed to being very quiet - no run of random builders vans nor dumping nor the ‘strange vehicle things’ that used to go on at the derelict end near Homebase.I recently reported a huge roll of cable abandoned by the workers building the brilliant new ramp opposite Syon Lane station which I guess wasn’t pinched because it was under one of the ‘serious security cameras’ outside the station.

There was a guy who used to run a shop along the parade that Jim refers to, who would dump any unwanted stock in Mill Plat.  I kid you not, he was witnessed on more than one occasion carrying old sofas, chairs, cupboards and all sorts across the busy Twickenham Road in broad daylight.  I know for a fact that he was reported several times but he was still doing it for months.Just as with the police and crime, the problem here is with priorities.  Let it be known that dealing with certain types of transgression is a low priority and those who are minded to do it will do so with impunity.

Catch them on CCTV and make them pay.It's disgusting the amount of rubbish dumped everytwhere but especially so in High Streets.

It may be that a some of the businesses will not pay for the larger 'Paladin' bins that they really should have, after all it's 'free' to dump your cr*p on the pavement and let other council taxpayers cough up. I do know that there are often issues with people who live in flats over parades of shops and places to store their refuse, so to get rid of the pong they stick it out on the street. Really it comes back to people to be able to visit and sort things out.

As mentioned upstream, the same situation exists on Twickenham Road outside the shops between Linkfield Road and St John's Road. Yesterday there was a large pile of rubbish outside the fish and chip shop.JL

The picture was taken 3 days ago Sarah. That shopping parade has some very commendable shops including the Printing Ink Shop on the corner of Thornbury Road, Curd's the Chemist next door (although sadly now missing Colin and Anthea who have retired), two respectable looking firms of Estate Agents, The Coffee Pot Thai cafe (once part owned by Gary Glitter), the Newsagents, the other delightful cafe...but it is thoroughly spoiled by the mod who use Domino Pizza and the scruffy flats above.I was shocked by the pile of black bags against the telephone kiosk(?) and the mattress was the last straw.Why are we blighted by so many "crap" people along this stretch of road these days. It's sad to see. And as for any attempt to sort the bag' contents to help OUR recycling targets..well you're talking to a brick wall.There was even a larger pile of black bags on the corner of Hounslow High Street and Kingsley Road today (outside the Pawnbrokers).  Why?

Jim’s photograph outside the parade of shops is a common along there – although that day looks particularly bad.  Was that taken after a bank holiday, Jim?If we have a large amount of rubbish I take it to the tip halfway through the week rather than leaving it outside.We probably need a drive to remind people to make sure their bags and boxes can’t split and when to place them outside.  The starting point here (Jim's photograph) might be to check out the contents of the bags to see if the owners can be traced from the contents.  Sometimes the only way to resolve an issue is to check the contents of the rubbish sacks and work backwards.We are very lucky that our Council has negotiated the use of other local tips – I frequently use Townmead Road where the workers are always amazingly helpful.  Cat lovers arriving at the tip just before they open will see the cat who lives at the tip smacking his breakfast lips and wandering slowly under the gate and away for the day.

At one time the council would have had inspectors who would search through rubbish and try and find some clues as to it belonged to. They would then get a visit and be told in no uncertain terms what to do in future and if they didn't comply could be prosecuted. Sadly with all the cuts I don't know how many of these inspectors are left - if there are any at all. And people wonder why we've got urban foxes! Piece from yesterday's "i" - "They are opportunists who will take food where they find it; they are in towns because humans, far filthier than any so-called vermin, like to leave their uneaten food on the street".

Sadly...parts of Isleworth are going downhill and downhill.The pavements in front of the parade of shops just along from the Fire Station are becoming an eyesore and dump. Once this area was respectable and a delight..but no more. Why?It's slum practice.

To be fair Jim, the council must have one hell of a problem keeping up with the rubbish that residents and businesses dump. It really does need people to take responsibility for clearing up after themselves and not to keep expecting the council to walk around after them. Don't even get me started on the foxes as so many people said if we cleared up after ourselves they wouldn't fare so well. I think people are over-reacting about this, who on earth has a back door open at night in this weather enough to let a fox in? I see the family concerned moved pretty quickly...............

You should have seen parts of Hounslow around Bell Road on Sunday - it was really appalling, again shops seemed to be the main culprits. However, I think the waste bins could do with emptying more often too.

On Twickenham Road the pavement outside the shops between Linkfield Road and St John's Road has long been a dumping ground for rubbish and bagged refuse put out on the wrong days.JL.

Which end of Linkfield Road are you referring to Julie?  Theo Dennison is one of the councillors for Syon ward and he has a good reputation for getting these kind of matters dealt with.
