Kew Bridge bullet scars
In the middle of Kew bridge there are 'bullet' scars. When I was a young sea cub, in the northern arches of the bridge, just after WW2, our scout master told us, that a hero, as I remember it a policeman, had had a duel with a german aircraft, a Stuker dive bomber, on the bridge. Sheltering under the eastern parapet and firing on the plane as it straffed the bridge from the east, then running across the road, wounded, to the western parapet, as the plane turned and firing back at it again, as the plane straffed the bridge from the west. Our scout master was angry that the policeman didn't get a V.C., which could have been to do with his not being military. This, he told us, was why the bullet marks are left on the bridge, as a memorial. I guess the river sides of the parapet were repaired. I've heard people discount this memory of mine, saying it was a bomb, but the scars look more like bullet wounds than bomb damage to me. I believe the policeman died. Can any of you add to, confirm or deny this?
