EU Commissioners investigating alleged Price Fixing by Petrol Companies

Is this just coincidental after we have been moaning about overpriced petrol charges forever and yet nothing has been done,yet as soon as the Referendum hits the spotlight we have EU Commissioners on white chargers riding to our rescue. Could this be another Cyprus their financial problems happened overnight if you remember we are led to believe, yet they have only just received 2 Billion Euro out of the 10 Billion promised to them to aid them in their time of need!! depositors are still having to  pay tax on their savings.Whatever is found a cap on Petrol & Diesel Prices would be welcomed, I can remember when Petrol was 7/6d = 35np a Gallon yes the cost of living has gone up however wages are not comparable.

Chris,Of course they are not,take Amazon for instance their figures for last year was what 4.2 Billion and they paid practically zero in tax, they even got a 2.4 Million Pound grant would you believe.Yet here Corporation Tax runs between 22 and 25% even though business is processed here the actual monies are taken in another country within the EU whose tax is greatly decreased.Is this fair I along with a great many pay Income Tax on a monthly basis if we have to contribute so should they.Perhaps if Government and Council were to go back to using our own work forces even though many have been disbanded, instead of outsourcing to European Companies the cost would be a great deal less. Let us not forget that any company doing work here from Europe pays their taxes in their own country not ours because their  Head Office is where the accounts are processed.Look at just how little of the workforce were from the UK whilst the Olympic Stadium was being built,how much did we loose in tax. 1176 UK workers were actually employed on site for that stadium the rest were foreign. So much for improving our Infrastructure.

Adam,I used Cyprus rightly or wrongly as a paradigm, it appeared that a referendum fever had overtaken the UK so Brussels felt that they should show that they cared and were in control.I still wish for the UK to be Autonomous and the only way to do that is to choose in/out!!

I think Dawn there is a difference between contributing and paying. Your contribution of £1,400 is added to all the other contributions from a variety of sources which together hopefully total enough to pay for the services. Hence the two main debates at the moment - are enough sources contributing their fair share (eg major International Companies) and is the cost (or provision) of some of the services too high

Off subject as such but whilst driving in France, Belgium and Holland over the weekend I note that petrol here is several pence a litre cheaper (considerably more in Holland) than over there.

Nobody but nobody deserves this kind of pay, silly me I thought our Council Tax contributed to public services if this is not so then why do my husband and I pay £1400 per year?

Two thirds of the price of petrol goes back to the taxpayer to help pay for public services, pensions etc. I prefer that to the alleged price fixing contributing to Bob Dudley's meagre remuneration of only $9,990,000 last year. Though he did get $1.7M in shares in case he's a bit short.

Susan, One day back I provided information on how many MEPs there are sitting in the European Parliament also information with regard to how many Commissioners there were the different roles they play, their salaries plus monthly entertainment allowances, also how the Common Market now known as the EU first came about.Incidentally all official prints. All 2000 on this site now know all of the history of the EU and yet not one has come back to debate except you my dear, do you contact me to debate of course not you contact me to criticize my use of punctuation. I always know when a point has been proven, how? you may ask, by idiotic criticism also unfortunately no debate is forthcoming.

I can remember when petrol was five shillings a gallon, come to that. Where on earth does Cyprus fit into this rant? "depositors are still having to  pay tax on their savings." What on earth are you on about? Have you heard of punctuation? Try cutting it with water.Two-thirds of the price of petrol goes to the government in tax, rather than to the oil companies. Maybe they're the ones who should be investigated?
