Plans to replace Hammersmith Flyover with a tunnel

I heard some exciting news today about plans to replace the Hammersmith Fly-over with a tunnel. http://www.lbhf.gov.uk/Directory/News/Tunnel_vision_to_replace_outdated_flyover.aspThe plans appear to be driven (excuse the pun) by Hammersmith and Fulham Council and have huge support from local residents. I wonder what the likelihood is of Hounslow Council leading a similar campaign to remove the M4 flyover and maybe link the two tunnelling projects? How amazing Brentford would be without the crumbling eyesore cutting our town in half and coughing out toxins 24:7.

I heard about the Hammersmith Flyover proposal and wondered the same thing.Why not a tunnel all the way to the Boston Manor Throat?The M4 Flyover is nearly as sick as the Hammersmith one and  both the steel and concrete sections are going to need replacementAn 8 lane tunnel ( this time with hard shoulders and refuges would create such massive relief that would benefit all of west london.Of course the A4 would have to remain so not so much space would be gained for a mile or so of it but it could be very beneficial in terms of returning businesses to the Golden mile as a more attractive location and at least make some of the ludicrous housing developments along the UKs most polluted highway a bit more realistic as a place to live.

Boston indeed did the right thing with the Big Dig as the traffic is like London - horrendous. But in beautiful Boston they seem to have people with some foresight whereas here it's all about bean counters and number crunching. Quite frankly - and having seen the appalling cock-up that 'traffic engineeers' have made with just one small mini roundabout installation in Isleworth, I'm not sure who could be trusted to carry out what would be a huge project.

That would be amazing! In my husband's hometown of Boston, Massachusetts, they did just that, replacing the aging elevated freeway running through the city towards Logan Airport with three tunnels. The project was called The Big Dig. It took 25 years from planning to completion in 2007 and was very costly. But the difference it made to traffic and quality of life in the city is enormous. The flyover was replaced by the Rose Kennedy Greenway, a peaceful green pedestrian oasis which links the town to the river. With vision and collective will it can be done. Brentford could then genuinely claim to be brilliant.
