Northern Ireland is also trialling something differentSydney has Victorian terraces too and has problems with wheelie bins.http://www.governmentnews.com.au/2013/06/07/article/City-of-Sydney-experiment-dumps-wheelie-bins/HQWMDVVFXQhttp://www.letsrecycle.com/news/latest-news/waste-management/bryson-recycling-seeks-work-in-mainland-uk(The wheelie thing being trialled in NI is at the end of this article here)I don't know how you manage with recycling every two weeks. We don't know what you can recycle where you are - how well it compares to us. We can recycle a lot of things and weekly would be better for recycling and since we have a weekly food waste collection which takes the potentially smelly and unpleasant stuff away we could go longer on the unrecyclable waste. One family has gone for a year before they filled their ordinary sized (one black sack's worth) - I haven't achieved that but I don't have to panic when a collection is missed.Paperwork is still our worst problem - keeping up with it and stopping the unnecessary stuff ever arriving.

I OZ we have 3 wheelie bins. Waste, recycle and garden. Waste weekly, recycle and garden every two weeks. Works really well.

http://apps.rhs.org.uk/advicesearch/Profile.aspx?pid=635Share a collection - something like hippobags (online or from a DIY store) or delivery to the Reuse & Recycling Centre with a neighbour/s?
I use a Hounslow compost bin - but find the garden waste collection useful for dealing with woody tree prunings. Would anything else cope with these in a reasonabe timescale without me burning them or buying a shredder ?

http://www.hounslow.gov.uk/composting There is a link on here which takes you through to the compost bins, wormeries and digester on offer plus more. Here are some vids how to put a wormery together and how they work. There are lots of these on the web which will help you. You can even keep a wormery on a balcony.http://www.originalorganics.co.uk/the-tiger-wormery.htm?gclid=COHNz4yasbgCFQKWtAodLhcAfwttp://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Mvmy9jZgHn8

There are other ways you can deal with garden waste.LBH has subsidised compost bins and wormeries and possibly digesters.

The first steps to imposing fortnightly collections is being put in to motion I reckon

Did the Council provide you with bins before? I've only seen wire baskets with a lid.
Mine arrived three minutes ago.I was about to complain that it arrived un-numbered - then someone arrived to write the house number on the blank white space. Is there a mechanism for the Council to collect the old round bins that the wheelie bin is meant to replace ?Or can I hope that the trial is a failure and keep my old bin on the off-chance ?

Congratulations on the new arrival! Now you'll have to feed it and wash it and find it a place to sleep and accompany it wherever it goes and make sure it comes home at night...

Yes Jim this unwanted item was delvered today.Well I say delivered it was actually left 15 yds away on the other side of the road.On our road it is not foxes that rip open the black bags, resulting in rubbish strewn across the road. There is no food in the rubbish bags...it's heavy handling by the bin men that results in bags breaking.Still...you can't fight city hall...
