SteveI think a decade is optimistic (from a Conservative perspective).  Whatever happens in 2014, the general election the following year is likely to produce either a Labour or a Labour-led government, and the local election of 2018 will take place slap bang in the middle of that, with all that that entails in terms of the obligatory mid-term protest vote.  And there is unlikely to be either a general or a European election held on the same day.The way things are currently shaping up, the likelihood is that the Tories will be rent asunder by internal splits and demoralisation for a long time to come.  On the other hand there is a real groundswell of dissatisfaction - and increasingly organised dissatisfaction - amongst residents' groups in several parts of the borough - not least in Chiswick, where the impotence of the Tories in opposition has manifested itself quite starkly, as has their preference for inane party politicking over taking up real community causes in a mature and constructive manner. The threat to Labour control in 2018 will therefore, in my view, come primarily from the residents' movement, quite possibly fortified by the presence of some elected members from emergent small parties.A cursory glance at Labour's most recent propaganda output, from HM Magazine to Councillor Sharma's frankly unhinged Chronicle article in which he used the tragic deaths of two local residents in a fire to attack the ICG, would suggest that Labour understands this very well indeed.

It simply shows that again and again, Labour are utterly spineless when it comes to dealing with those who pull a fast one and then use the 'R' word as cover, knowing that they will cack themselves each time.It may well be normal practice in the sub continent and quite a few european countries to be corrupt in this way, ( I know I've worked there for 11 years and that's the way it is)  but it should be made very clear to anyone wanting to participate in UK politics at any level in any party, that it is NOT acceptable here.Irrespective of race, creed or colour, period.Unfortunately, Hounslow and Ealing have a history of rather dubvious practices by Labour and Conservative members who happen to be Asian. One can even accept that for those who came to this country as adults were used to things like this being the norm and that they do not deem it corrupt. But such is the fear of being perceived to be racist and possibly lose votes, Labour in particular, has turned a blind eye.30 years on and this is still going on. Now, it is not acceptable as there really is no excuse. It should be tackled whether they be Asian, European,African, Martian or any other nationality who do not wish to put honesty, duty and honour at the top of their tree. It's bizarre that still, individuals who dare make a remark that is close to the truth still get bumped into a Nazi like Kangaroo court and you can guarantee the subject of the remarks will never get investigated and proven or disproven.Clearly the reaction by the party indicates how uncomfortable it makes them. In other words, they are fearful of what may be going on.It may have escaped their notice, but there are millions of honest Asians in this country who like many Moslems are here to live in an honest, fair society. They, like most of us do not want to see corruption tainting our society either or their culture and heritage tainted by the few. This is in some cases why they left their homelands to escape the greed and corruption.Standards Anyone? Mine's a double!!

Here is the full text of the article by Robert Cumber in the 18th July 2013 edition of the Hounslow Chronicle. I am quoting it in full because it is an important issue and the Hounslow Chronicle is not widely circulated in Brentford:QUOTATION STARTS "ANSWERS have been demanded after a Labour Councillor was suspended without any public reason being given."Councillor Elizabeth Hughes has been suspended by Hounslow Labour Group, subject to an appeal, the Chronicle has learned."But a wall of silence surrounds the reason behind the sanction for the Heston West ward councillor, who was first elected in 2006."Local party chiefs have refused even to confirm her suspension - it was left to Mrs Hughes herself to do that, after being approached by the Chronicle."The party's regional office today confirmed she had been granted an appeal to be heard next week by a London Labour Party panel, but declined to comment on the reason for her suspension."Opposition leaders insist voters who re-elected Mrs Hughes with a huge majority in 2010 deserve to know why local party chiefs have taken action against her.""She has been a good, long-serving ward councillor. Given she was elected as a Labour councillor, people need to know what's happened to make the party lose confidence in her," said Hounslow Conservative Group leader Peter Thompson."His comments came after he launched a scathing attack on standards within Hounslow Labour Group at Tuesday's (July 16) borough council meeting."Referring to the appeals tribunal in May, at which Labour councillor Mohinder Gill was ruled to have breached the members code of conduct on three counts, but cleared of a further two breaches, he called on fellow councillors to reaffirm their commitment to maintaining the highest standards in public life.""Let us all remember that first Nolan principle 'holders of public office should take decisions solely in terms of the public interest'," he said." "In other words, party interests cannot be placed first and let us all remember that as conscientious councillors we have a duty to blow the whistle on misconduct.""Mr Thompson said that meant:* no more appearances in Private Eye's Rotten Boroughs column* no more using our position as a councillor to 'improperly secure and advantage for another person or persons'* no more 'failing to treat (our officers) with respect'* no more free and undeclared meals when eating at the restaurants of prominent party members* no more conducting ourselves 'in a way which could reasonably be regarded as bringing his office or authority into disrepute'* no more lowering 'the confidence of the public in the council's ability to take decisions as a planning authority'."Mr Thompson's comments were greeted with applause by his fellow Conservatives and large swathes of those on the Labour benches."Mr Gill was last summer stripped of his planning powers by the council's independent standards committee over his behaviour at a planning meeting in 2010."A tribunal considering his appeal concluded in May he had breached the code of conduct on three counts by voting to allow an illegal extension to stand, in the face of clear photographic evidence supporting its demolition."However, it ruled he had not known when making his decision that the property in question was home to former Labour candidate Harleen Atwal."Neither Mr Gill nor any senior figure in the Hounslow Labour Group has ever publicly apologised for his behaviour, nor has he been sanctioned in any way by the party. I think this Hounslow Chronicle report confirms what many of us suspectedI wonder what our old friend from this forum cllr David Hughes thinks of his wife being branded a racist by his own comrades?!A LABOUR councillor has been punished for sending an email which helped expose a disgraced party colleague, the Chronicle can reveal.Elizabeth Hughes, who has represented Heston West since 2006, was suspended by the Hounslow Labour Group earlier this month.A wall of silence had surrounded the reason for the sanction, but a leaked document obtained by the Chronicle reveals it was an email she sent complaining about fellow Labour councillor Mohinder Gill. That email ultimately led to Mr Gill being found by an appeals tribunal in May to have abused his powers in voting not to take enforcement action against the home of a former Labour candidate.Leaked minutes of the Labour group meeting at which Mrs Hughes' suspension was agreed, on July 5, give the reason as 'uncomradely behaviour and racist language'.The minutes show this refers to a private email from Mrs Hughes to the group's then chief whip Alan Barber in September 2010 complaining about Mr Gill's behaviour at a planning meeting the previous night. As the Chronicle revealed in May, she wrote: "It's all back to the Asian boys' club.
