Holidays 2005 - suggestions?

Our letterbox is working overtime, with inviting looking holiday brochures flopping on the doormat. We usually go on hols abroad twice a year and we're looking for something a bit different for next year. We like the usual things - beaches, local foods and wine, old buildings, a bit of walking, clean and comfortable accommodation(not necessarily sumptious), meeting other happy holiday makers, but NO caravans, coaches, canvas or cruises! Any ideas, suggestions, recommendations based on personal experience, useful pointers etc please? Thanks.  ;-)

How cold is it. I've packed thick rugby shirts, jeans and a warm fleece. Will I need a coat?I've also booked up to go and watch the mighty Bees at Wrexham and the 2 home games. Cant wait.

I start my holiday this weekend, leave for Singapore on Sunday, 2 nights in Singapore then 2 weeks in Brentford.

I didn't find Singapore too expensive(mind you I live in the most expensive place on Earth just about!).Eating in Chinatown is very cheap(2 can eat for about 3 quid)but a place called the Boat Quay I found quite expensive(25 quid for 2 without wine)and the food nowhere near as good as Chinatown.Having a beer isn't that cheap in a bar(1.75 quid a bottle)but that is cheaper than UK or OZ by far.A taxi or bus is very reasonable and clean also.The shopping centres are good value if you stay away from Orchard Rd.We found a place called the Mustafa centre where there is a great variety of products at good prices.

Gerry.Should point out what  a Singaporeon friend once told me, all you  said  about Singapore  is true , but it comes at a price , a price which I suggest is far to high for most of us to pay.

Cheers, Gerry. I was actually on a short break from my real holiday, which is in Hua Hin ,a small resort on the gulf of Thailand.Lovely little place,laid back, good day and night markets,food great,people very friendly,sea lovely and warm,beautiful beaches,really cheap...what more can I say?On to Australia on Sat.for a couple of days to say hello to some family....it's a hard life!

Ah KEITH, thanks and enjoy your Tiger beer tonite. At the moment I really fancy going down to the Katong district of Singapore, where there are lots of small family restaurants - with air-con - tucking into a large bowl of Singapore laksa, some grilled prawns and nasi goreng, all washed down with a couple of large ice cold Tiger beers. Life doesn't get any better than this! Enjoy your holiday Keith. ;-)

KEITH, pleased you're having a good time in the Lion City. I'm very familiar with Singapore - its so clean one could eat off the pavements...no chewing gum stains you'll have noticed, transport is a pleasure, trains are plentiful and on time, so are air con'd busses, taxis are dead cheap, the people are civilised - no crime, no grafitti, no rubbish in the streets, the food is as good as any other city I've visited. Would love to be there at this moment - you lucky so-and-so! Have fun!  ;-)PS-I'll be there later this year for a massive family reunion. ;-)

hi gerry have you been to africa  ghana  west africa its such a beautiful place the people are so friendly the food is good and the beaches are beautiful and its only 6 and a half hours from heathrow its hot all year round lots to see and do and lots of culture. Many nice drinking places and beautiful hotels to stay at the only thing is you do need some jabs.all the bestDebbie

hi gerry have you been to africa  ghana  west africa its such a beautiful place the people are so friendly the food is good and the beaches are beautiful and its only 6 and a half hours from heathrow its hot all year round lots to see and do and lots of culture. Many nice drinking places and beautiful hotels to stay at the only thing is you do need some jabs.all the bestDebbie

Yes SARAH, sorry to say I'll be flying low over your home in Islewoth in Singapore Airlines ex LHR 12 noon sometime later this year, non stop for S'pore. The TAN Family reunion you'll recall. I'll wave to you from the rear of the aircraft - economy class you understand. ;-(

There is a holiday/travel agents advertising board at Griffin Park - www.travellingonline.co.uk - had a look - some interesting destinations and excellent prices on their seven day cancellations button.  Food for thought.

Husband and I are off to Minorca for 2 weeks with our 3 year old daughter. We are going to a Thomson Super family hotel. I presume this means we will spend 2 weeks with loads of kids running around us and being very loud! Should be fun :o) Hopefully off to NZ next year to see the in-laws.

Neil,You are all making me quite nostalgic ....  have a great time when you get home to the Old Borough, and I hope you meet up with all our Forum Friends.March - all the trees will be just bursting into buds, daffodils will be out, and Brentford should be looking just lovely.(Ann thinks: "1 hour to Waterford Airport, 40 minutes to Luton, bus up to London - could be there in a few hours...how about that coach trip to Hartlepool????  Be your age, you silly woman, and stop day dreaming, the trip could kill you!").

As yet REBECCA, haven't booked anything. As a family, we have a problem this year. There's gonna be a very large TAN family reunion(about 200+ members!) which is scheduled for later this year in Singapore. We haven't heard when the date for the reunion is to be, plus we're having some work done to our garden this Spring - hence we're unable to book our own hols - things are on HOLD. There've been some tempting suggestions so far - thanks for them. How about your holiday plans? Anything exiciting?  ;-)
