Isleworth Clock Tower:  Two Joys KILLED in WW1

HiMy Great Uncle Patrick Joy is remembered on the Isleworth clock tower memorial. He was killed in action at Mons in 1914,There is another Joy underneath his name. I live in the IOW now and I would be very grateful if any kind soul passing could just look and tell me his initials and date of death as I think he may also be a relation.ps The Joys used to live behind the church in Stafford Place before it was demolished

The Commonwealth War Graves Commission site gives these details for Patrick;JOY, PATRICKRank:Lance CorporalService No:L/14531Date of Death:23/08/1914Age:21Regiment/Service:Royal Fusiliers 4th Bn. Panel Reference MemorialLA FERTE-SOUS-JOUARRE MEMORIALAdditional Information:Son of Bartholomew and Annie Frances Joy, of 43, Princes Rd., Teddington, Middx.Thomas does indeed appear to be Patrick's uncle.  Bartholomew (Patrick's father) & Thomas were both son's of David & Johanah Joy.  According to the 1881 census they were living in South Street, Isleworth & all born Ireland.  Looks like Bartholomew himself was a regular soldier as the family were in barracks (Tower of London District) in 1901.  Bartholomew was a Lance Corporal in the Middlesex Reg.  It also appears that both Patrick & Thomas were regular soldiers as Patrick was in barracks in 1911 (Aldershot) & Thomas was in Osmaston, Derby described as being in the infantry.  He was also married.If you want to take this further Jonathan, probably best to send me a PM with your email address, I would be glad to help,Jane

You can get medal cards online from The National Archives and it's also worth looking at the Commonwealth War Graves Commission website, both these sites are full of information, they also have copies of War Diaries at TNA.

There were no dates on the memorial, Jonathan.Have you visited the Family history centre on the Isle of Wight?Newport Chestnut Close, Shide Road, Newport, PO30 1YD.Phone: 01983-532833 Hours: Tu, Th, Sat. 10am-1pm.The war records are on line and you can access them through the centres along with parish records, census returns etc.There are lots of on line records through the public archives too, including medals.

T (Thomas)Joy I'm almost certain is his Uncle,lived next door in Stafford place and died later in the War (incidentally were their dates on the memorial?) Best wishes Jonathan

Isleworth & Syon School always hold a short Remembrance ceremony at this memorial on Armistice Day every year.

Not sure , he is buried in Isleworth I believe, My family have been it the area for many generations so maybe. I'll look into it.Kind regards

I heard tell she used to quietly visit all the memorials along the A4 route between Windsor and London, including the college memorial at the top of college Road junction Borough Road, Isleworth.

I have been to Thiepval memorial Vanessa and the scale of it and the effect of seeing 77,000 names carved into is almost overwhelming. The service at Ypres is very poignant and is still heartfelt amongst the locals. There are 1800 Allied memorial sites in all and the remains of soldiers are still being found.

Talking memorials I'm off to France and Belgium next week with a group of boys as part of their history curriculum.  By coincidence they visit Thiepval memorial which is where my grandfather is commemorated as he was one of the hundreds of thousands never found on the Somme. We are also attending the service at the Menin Gate in Ypres, I think it will be a real eye opener for the boys to see the vast number of men that were lost.
