Please click on the above web address and sign the peition opposing a Third Runway at Heathrow.It is important that Sir Howard Davies, the Airports Commission, the Government and MP's of all parties are aware of the strong local opposition to this.

But would Mary McLeod follow the party line should a Tory government approve the building of a 3rd runway at Heathrow or is she prepared to loose the party whip and vote against such a proposal? The same question applies to Ruth Cadbury should she be elected and serve in a Labour government.

I welcome Ruth Cadbury's continued opposition to a third runway which she shares with our incumbent MP, Mary Macleod. However, there is no basis for her assumption that the third runway proposals has the tacit support of the Prime Minister. Prior to the 2010 General Election the Labour Government supported the building of a third runway. The Coalition Government did not and thanks to that plans to build a third runway were put on hold.

Those living under the existing flight paths will have their hopes of getting any reduction in noise impact destroyed.With flights overhead every minute for 70% of the time, residents across West London and beyond live in possibly the noisiest environment in Europe. And it’s not just noise. Studies show that the air quality and road traffic levels all add to the noise pollution and have a negative impact on children’s learning and the mental and physical health of many adults.The Davies Commission report could, however, have been worse: ‘Boris Island’ - the estuary airport idea - no longer has legs, the hub airport myth is exploded and Davies envisages only one extra runway in the south east.I do welcome the Commission’s promise to further investigate the impact of noise, but they need to look at more than just the failed Operational Freedoms trial. No one's suggesting the airport should shut, merely not expand. Most new jobs in this country in urban areas go to immigrant workers, which I imagine is what would happen with a 3rd runway/6th terminal. They might as well go and work at Gatwick and not clog up our roads and occupy local housing. I have to say I do not live in social housing and nor do my neighbours in this area (Osterley), and in any case I find the idea that residents in social housing are less worthy of the damaging effects of noise pollution highly offensive, as I'm sure they would.

ian have lived gone to school worked this area since 1955 and Heathrow has bought work this way and hopefully bring more.And if the landing taking off etc was over social housing who would worry.

Sorry Robert could you explain why you think it's acceptable to inflict that kind of noise pollution on nearly half London's population, and why a runway should not be built at Gatwick instead. You and Mr Welland seem to be long on bluster and short on detail.

Will have to be increased to pay for the multiple- billion pound cost of any new runway at Heathrow which will be much more expensive to build at Heathrow than at Gatwick, Stansted, Birmingham or Manchester.

"How about the owners of the airport and airline shareholders chipping in"Well the airport claims to incentivise the reduction of pollution by charging for NOx emissions at £6.09 / kg (at least that was the 2011 figure quoted at http://www.boeing.com/commercial/noise/2011HeathrowConditionsofUse.pdf  )Unfortunately, that seems rather cheap as Defra quote the costs for abating NOx in areas where it exceed the EU limits as £25 to £687/kg depending on the technique that is available to abate the pollution !https://www.gov.uk/government/uploads/system/uploads/attachment_data/file/197898/pb13912-airquality-abatement-cost-guide.pdf

I personally that these should be both noise and air pollution based with a noise charge much greater at Heathrow than Gatwick. They'd have to be levied on the customer, not the airline, at time of boarding. HACAN's website tells us that deaths from stroke, heart and circulatory disease are 20% higher in areas with high levels of aircraft noise than in places with the least noise. Researchers at Imperial College London and King's College London compared data on day- and night-time aircraft noise with hospital admissions and mortality rates among a population of 3.6 million people living near Heathrow airport. The findings are published in the British Medical Journal. The study covered 12 London boroughs and nine districts outside of London where aircraft noise exceeds 50 decibels - about the volume of a normal conversation in a quiet room. For me that puts experiencing aircraft noise on a level with passive smoking.

"They need to be made to"Davies backs away from any attempt to do this and subscribes to the "its too difficult to do" team when people have suggested reforming the arcane processes of slot allocations and "grandfathers rights". What was agreed internationally (in 1944?) must remain for ever........However, I sense the possibility that if transport options to get to Gatwick and Stansted were massively improved (and options to get to Heathrow became more awkward  - swingeing congestion charges for private vehicles to improve local air quality, anybody ?) then airlines might see increasing attractions to operate elsewhere.

If I was national dictator, I wouldn't build one anywhere, but I think the trick needs to be gather enough stroppy opposition to Heathrow to send the bulldozers to Gatwick. The main problem is getting the airlines to agree - they need to be made to.

Phil is right. This is not a done deal. The last Labour Government wanted to build a Third Runway but thanks to the opposition of Mayor Boris Johnson, London and Berkshire local authorities, MP's and candidates like Mary Macleod, HACAN and local residents, the Conservatives and Lib Dems stopped it for the lifetime of this Parliament and Government. The campaign must now continue to ensure that the next Government will formed by a party or parties pledged not to build a Third Runway.

VanessaYou may be right about Sir Howard Davies but if you are against the Third Runway, it will do you no harm to sign the petition. Just copy the website address into your browser and fill in a very simple form.

Where has Sir Howard Davies been for the last umpteen years then? For God's sake if those who are looking at this don't know by now how people feel then they never will. For what it's worth I think it will be Heathrow whatever the opposition.
