Brentford on Thames

How does a Town receive the -on Thames 'tag' as a part of its name?  Seems those Southerners on the Surrey bank have more than their fair share?

I've heard estate agents call it Brentford-upon-Thames....'Pretentious....moi?'

Richmond-upon-Thames is to differentiate it from the original Richmond in Yorkshire (the original name being Sheen). Kingston again to differentiate between Thames and Hull.

Did anyone find out what the Estate agent speak was for the Kew development with panoramic views of the tip...flies from the rotting garden rubbish and the delightful odours from everything else?

SARAH, I think the "on-Thames" suffix is a touch old hat for some of the towns mentioned in this topic.Hows about some with a novel ring like:St Margarets en PonceorEaling de la TramorBrentford by BeechamsorActon mid SoapsudsorChiswick sur Damp MeadowsorIsleworth sous Sewerage 'neath Mogden!Wad d'yer reckon?  ;-)

Tsk, tsk.  I am merely stating that if there is no particular qualification for receiving a such a title - one should state ones claim! ..or should that be stake ones claim? ( ...said in my best Chis-wickian voice  :-)  )

This is all estate agent speak - I live adjacent to St. Margarets and have done for years, now all of a sudden we're hearing "St. Margarets Village"? and "St. Margarets on Thames" - no doubt yet another ploy to push up house prices, and in my view snobbery run riot, come back Hyacinth all is forgiven.

...and as it is 'On the Thames' as well, hows about combining the name?  Those who are wanting to negotiate the Brent will be grateful they can find the right place to ford it (!)    :-)      ... and we can firmly place a claim to being on The Thames!Isleworth - On - Thames would sound loooverley too!

Isn't Brentford-on-Thames illogical? I mean is the fording of the River Brent that gives the town its name!

Brentford-on-Thames has a nice ring - dunno what old Brentfordians feel about it though.  :-o
