Brentford Maps 1894

According to Gillian Clegg's book (page 91) the Hand and Flower Pub at 379 Brentford High Street "had been licensed by at least year 1765 and closed around 1904. Holland Gardens now cover its site"Must have been fun.. candlelight and open fires to keep warmand staggering home in the dark before gas lighting came along!------------------------The third pub along there at No 384 Brentford High Street was the Fox and Hounds...once again licensed by at least 1778 and closed around 1919. Here Gillian Clegg's picture has been chopped and photoshopped and hopefully will look fine.

What's the date of the Hand and Flower pub. Fillers took over a lot of the Royal Breweries pubs.

Thanks Neil. I'm taking the original pictures in Gillian's book and giving them a wash and brush up..and a suitable crop..and displaying them on Flickr and here. They somehow come more alive.It seems that the Hand and Flower was a Fullers pub...

First of all thanks to Paul for initiating this Forum thread and publishing those links to maps of Brentford Town and more.Thanks also to Neil for that information about the three pubs alongside St George's Church. One had visions of them being a bit out of place alongside that place of worship!So, that map showed 1) The Marquis of Granby (1809-1901)..2) The Hand and Flower. 3) The Fox and Hounds.The local historian Gillian Clegg (RIP) mentioned all three alcoholic premises in her book "Brentford and Chiswick Pubs" ISBN 0-7524-3723-2 and she, several times, kindly gave me permission to use images from her books when posting on the Forums.Here is a picture of the Marquis of Granby.."sandwiched" between the Church (without it's Tower..at that time)and a shop advertising Zebra Polish.It's all different now!

The pub next door to the Church, marked on the map, was the Marquis of Granby. It opened c.1809 and closed c.1901 and the building was demolished.

Here is an interesting postcard picture of Windmill Road, Brentford. Probably 1930s or before.No massive puddles in the road on this occasion!

The pub right next door to the church is gone by 1894. Might try the 1891 and 1901 census when II'm back at work.

According Kelly's 1909 you have St George's then a coach builders and then two pubs, the Hand & Flower then the Fox and Hounds

It's hidden from view amongst all the vegetation on Brentford Ait..or is the channel still there to see? Interesting that Ait is located in Surrey even though it is located close to the Brentford riverbank.  Lot's Ait is in Syon Ward, Brentford Middlesex.What was the name of the pub that was once on Brentford Ait?

Thanks Paul for those great links... most helpful and interesting. I've been comparing the images you directed us towith the 1894 Alan Godrey Maps (Old Ordnance Survey) and yours are more detailed!For example, three pubs are adjacent to the high church establishment.. St George's! Wonder what they were called.
