NEW MINI MARKET

Welcome to Al Shaam Market on the High Street. The meat is excellent - very tender lamb chops and plump chicken breasts that don't leave a pool of water in the pan. Fresh meat dishes made up daily (do try the diced chicken in spices). Good prices and pleasant, friendly service. The make hummus and aubergine dip plus stuffed vine leaves on the premises. Good fresh olives too. A very welcome addition to the High Street.

Oh dear. Following a hygiene inspection some months back this establishment did badly. Only 1 out of 5! But so did La Trompette in Chiswick some months back too.

Hear, hear. I think that meat should be labelled to say exactly what its source is. Just as Muslims can be advised when meat is Halal, we should also have the right to be told so that we can avoid it.

I might add that we do use the mini market just not for Halal meat and that applies to anywhere that sells it.What is not so good are supermarkets that sell Halal without telling you.Many now have separate Halal counters.As for the slaughter the stun is a blow to the head and not administered in the same way. The animal is trussed first and is frightened.None of this is a savoury subject but modern slaughter houses have made huge investments to minimise the ordeal for the animal and I cannot see why Halal and Kosher cannot be incorporated into this.I do eat meat but think it important to me that one knows just what it takes to bring it to the table.

http://www.bbc.co.uk/iplayer/episode/b03yb6h2/Countryfile_Perthshire/Apparently most Halal meat IS stunned before slaughter.  This programme was very interesting.I think if you are a meat eater you really should make sure that you do eat that meat and not waste it.  The idea of breeding animals for meat, killing them and then just adding to our growing waste problem is enough to turn you (or me) into a vegetarian.  anyway the minimarket sounds great and I'd eat baba ghanoush  for breakfast if I had a chance.

I bought Halal meat for years, believing it was just a matter of a form of blessing that was administered at the slaughter as well as the blood letting.I've since found that both Kosher and Halal slaughter is near medieval and takes mass slaughter for meat backwards rather than the efforts to make production slaughter as humane as possible.The process brings terrible protracted suffering for the animal. Something I witnessed here in this country and never want to be party to again.So sorry, but not something anyone with humanity and respect for other species on this planet who provide our means to exist should be party to.
