Censorship

CensorshipI started this thread because some of the views on censorship in the cheers for Auntie Thread.I must of had my head in the sand all these years that Rap artists have been pushing what they would like you to think is music.I was converting a CD to MP3 for one of my Granddaughters and I can honestly say I sat though 60 Minuets of utter filth, its just not swear words you have to put up with but descriptions of unnatural acts that no 13 or 14 year should even know about.I think most of the time adults are unaware of what’s said because its spoken in today’s speak, in fact my Granddaughter translated some of it for me!Now my first reaction was to through the lot in the dustbin or not convert any more over to MP3, but then you turn on the radio or TV and it’s all there as well.How can we as adults, stop them from hearing such filth if its push at them 24/7 by most commercial stations.

My two STILL listen to tripe - have you heard Damien Rice? talk about depressing! As for Eminem - yuk! You should see me trying to buy CDs for them for Christmas - I haven't a clue where to look or whether it's pop, blues,(c)rap, I just find a young assistant and give them a piece of paper with the name of what I'm looking for on it. Much as The Beatles when they started were considered quite revolutionary, I can never remember my Mum and Dad moaning about the music, in fact my Dad was quite partial to Little Richard! But the stuff that passes for music now has me tutting with the best of them!

This is similar to a story a friend of mine told me yesterday about his 2 nieces,13 and 15,who recently attended a dance at school.The only way any boys would dance with them was if the stuck their backsides out and allowed the boys to 'grind'them,if you can follow my drift.They said to dance any other way would have brought ridicule on them from their peers..sad,indeed,eh?.

“Indistinguishable to me most of the time,”Vanessa the above just about says it all, I’m not about to embark on a personal crusade against the music Industry, but the fact that most of us don’t really understand what's being sung or in this case talked about.Your Children have all grown up now, so I doubt they will bring any of this home and keep playing it, similar to the way we did with the Beatle’s and the Rolling Stones.Since posting this on this forum I’ve had a good discussion with my two Grandchildren, they now understand why I find it offensive although they seem to have no problem with it themselves.They seem a lot more informed than I was at there age, but we are negotiating a comprise at the moment, although it will probably end with me being conned.But how far will these people push the boundaries, if we don’t raise any objection to the content now.

The thing is the kids take all this in their stride - I hate it - not because of the "lyrics" - indistinguishable to me most of the time, but because it isn't music, well not to ears weened on The Beatles and Abba anyway. I do love Robbie and Blue which kills my boys, but in my experience the kids find their own balance and they do just love to shock just for the reaction, it's not something I've lost any sleep over.

I sympathise in your dilema.My father would not have allowed it to have been played in his house,either on the radio or on record if the music had a crude and vulgar intent.Who's to say he would have been wrong when impressionable young minds are at stake?

The material is out there. I’m not saying that this is a good thing or a bad thing but some people of differing ages are obviously attracted to it, otherwise there wouldn’t be a market for it. Yes, the music industry puts it forward but it’s the buyers who form the market.

AnnThis will show my age a bit, but when I refered to nice looking young lady, see was attractive or beautiful, but the the youngsters now say "She's Fit" so how do we know what some artists are saying.When you ask what a certain saying means they seem to have no trouble in converting it back so I can understand.They seem to take these quite filthy meanings it their stride, or they are going over their head, I dont know, as most things are not left up to their imagination.But these people have no talent so how do they get to be so called entertainers, is it just record companies pushing it to make a lot of money.I agree with you about the the lowering of standards today through out the media, but when I use to play, I didn't have to resort to insulting anyone in the audience.I dont think I'm going to get Granddad of the year from my Grandaugthers as I've already binned one CD, Oooooops.

Paul,I don't like the idea of 'censorship', but there is a definite fall in standards of all kinds on t.v.My pet gripe is the presenter who ridicules:  two examples, (i) the guy who presents "Never Mind the Buzzcocks", (ii) Jonathan Ross, regularly insulting his guests, and (iii) those two guys who sit on a couch and even insult their audience (can't recall their names).  It seems 'celebs' fight to appear on these shows - WHY???? Is it that they are desperate just to be seen? Added to which, do the aforementioned chaps have any talent themselves?  What do they do?  They can't sing, dance or act, so how do they get these jobs?It is increasingly familiar to hear derogatory remarks made by 'nonentities' about fellow performers - why?  Isn't it just as easy to say something nice, or perhaps to say nothing at all?

Paul: Lets hope that the Hounslow Taleban trash all such lyrics..whether on discs, in the night-clubs or on the airwaves.  What do youngsters say when they hear it?
