My father asked me today if St George was Welsh (something to do with the dragon?). I replied that he was, I thought, Syrian. Dad was not pleased.

Well, I'd be up for celebrating Britain. No problem celebrating England either, just saying it's not part of my tradition.According to Wikipedia "The tradition of celebration St George's day had waned by the end of the 18th century after the union of England and Scotland" and "There is a growing reaction to the recent indifference to St George's Day. Organisations such as English Heritage and the Royal Society of Saint George (a non-political English national society founded in 1894) have been encouraging celebrations."

That 'logic' would be about right then...after all St. Patrick was born a middle-class Englishman by many accounts. I say we forget all the romanticised and distorted reasons and celebrate the fact that we ARE English, never mind we're NOT anyone else, which is hardly a declaration of pride in your own nation.

I must say that I was completely unaware of St George's day until the last few years. Mind you that was true for all the 'national' Saints' days. The first 'national' day I came across was Burns Night (not the same thing at all!) then St Paddy's day.I've always seen myself as British first and I don't really see the point of ST George's day. After all (unlike St Patrick) St George wasn't even English. The Celtic saints days are really an excuse for celebrating that they are NOT English

Big bad Boris did begin to celebrate St. George's day. When he was first elected he held a big folk concert in Trafalgar Sq. He now seems to br pandering to others.Happy St. George's day everyone.

Correction: we used to celebrate all 4 UK national days.and thus we remember all the dates.

Yes.. happy St Georges Day to all. I recall at Strand on the Green School in the 1940s that we used to celebrate the UK National Day with great pride.Perhaps that's what's missing.By the way, and as you'd expect, I think Boris is a fine Englishman... made up of many foreign parts.

It is a real shame Gerry that so many English are for some reason so reluctant to celebrate our National Saints day like other Countries do and I don't know if that's because of the PC world we live in where to do so is perceived by some to be racist or perhaps because we do not have a Bank HolidayWhat does annoy me is that both Livingstone and Johnson as London Mayors are more then happy to pump thousands of pounds funding St Patricks Day celebrations and yet are so reluctant to support St George`s Day each year

A happy St George's Day to Paul and Anne England too. St George has patronages in very many cities and countries around the world - a very popular Saint is St George. Why is it that the English don't celebrate him with the fervour and enthusiasm that other peoples do? There are National Day events I know, but they aren't widespread and in everyone's face. In Singapore where I'm from originally, National Day is in early August and everyone but everyone celebrates with food, parades, parties, fireworks and fly-pasts etc - a great time is had by all including Indians, Malaysians, Indonesians, Thais...everyone! Its a really happy day.
