Brentford High Street closed this afternoon: another accident?

Seeing a 267 bus ..with passengers..on the Great West Road this afternoon raised my eyebrows.  It had come up Boston Manor Road, turned left at the Great West Road...and then did the "U" turn infront of the Glaxo building and proceeded towards Ealing Road. I guessed something must have happened on the High Street.About an hour later...travelling from Kew Bridge westerly ...all traffic was diverted up Ealing Road from the Watermans Art Centre. A Community Policeman confirmed to me that there had been another accident in the area. So that may explain any delays you may have heard about.

From a book I bought in Past times - Animal sayings and their meanings.A pedestrian who crosses the streets in disregard of traffic signals is referred to as a 'jaywalker'.The word is from about 1915 in America where 'jay' was already well established slang for a country bumpkin or rustic.  So 'jaywalkers' were acting like country people who had come up to town and were not accustomed to city ways.  However, the jay, a brightly coloured and noisy bird, has a tendency to be impudent and bold, to ignore dangers and shove other birds out of its way and that has led one authority to suggest that a jaywalker is so called for aggressively ignoring potentially lethal traffic and asserting his independence.

Graham.  Everyone is so sad to hear about Ollies accident.On Tuesday afternoon Simon-Anthony Bowles's coffin passed by the point of the accident in Brentford High Street.I am sure that everyone in the procession looked at the Police signs and thought of Ollie and you all.  We all did in our car.On the way back we encountered an example of jay walking near to the spot of your sons accident.  A pedestrian, coming out of the supermarket with shopping bags, was crossing on front of us at the point where the barriers stopped and allowed her to cross.  The crossing is only a few feet away, but she didn't even look for a safe place to cross.The latest thing we have heard about Simon-Anthony is he may have hit a dipped drain cover in the road.Lastly, there were a large number of people at Simon-Anthony's funeral on Tuesday to support the family, and many fabulous tributes.  Somebody recollected how the first time they saw Simon-Anthony he dived into the water and turned into a human fish, which made me feel better about my comment about him being like a dolphin.  You had to see him to believe it.  Picture a dolphin, diving into the swimming baths and doing a couple of lengths under water, then you get near to what he looked like.All so sad.

My name is Graham Burton; I am the father of Ollie Burton killed on Tuesday 11th January.It is a sad loss but we will remember him for the kind caring friendly and humorous lad he was.We are grateful to this site for reporting the events correctly as the press and people are too quick to blame "youngsters on scooters"He was riding carefully just going about his duties when this unfortunate accident happened and despite his best attempts to avoid the jaywalking lady he failed and it cost him his life.He will be deeply missed by many.RegardsGraham, Alison and Tom

This is something which worries me as I cycle from Isleworth to Hammersmith each morning. Hardly a day goes by without a pedestrian walking into the road in front of me and this morning the inevitable happened and I had a collision with a man who stepped out without warning- I had no time to use either my bell or my brakes. It was scary and we were both shaken, and he still told me off for not using my bell. He was knocked to the ground and my bike had obviously hurt his leg but thank goodness nothing more serious. My sincere condolences to friends and family of the poor young scooter rider.

A long time ago I heard a story about how the Police in the States, shoot at Jay walkers?  I don't know if it is true but it is often a discussion point as I drive around local areas.  Sometimes I subscribe to the same idea.  If I don't bring this up, its my back seat driving team constantly commenting because they can see somebody having a dance (as they dodge back and forward) in the road.  They say something in case I haven't noticed, which is probably a good idea as the driver is always a looser on this one.  Most often they comment on how 'terribly silly' the person is (yes, they use other words).The numbers of people wandering around in the road and not even attempting to find a crossing has appeared to increase over the last few years.  I find myself stopping so often because the choice is, allow the person to cross  or risk them going under my wheel or the oncoming vehcles wheel.  There is often a crossing within a few feet of where the person is wandering.Sometimes you think that the crossing IS in the wrong place for the 'convenience' of the Jaywalker, and you wonder how it was placed there anyway.  Mostly you thank God you have seen them and been able to stop.I am very sorry to hear of another scooter/motorbike accident.  Excuse me for repeating myself, but bloody bikes.This year is turning out to be a bad one.  :-(

The road was closed because a young man died. He was riding his scooter past Somerfields and a pedestrian stepped into the road in front of him causing him to lose control. The young man was killed instantaneously. He was 17 years old and one of the nicest people you could wish to meet.
