Composting is almost as scientific as making a souffle. Most compost sold has to meet a range of criteria to prevent transfer of diseases and of invasive insects. Some insects in abundance can cause a lot of damage and health risks to pets and childrenDIY composting is very ecologically sound but is not really practicable in small gardens as the composter or compost heap is too close to other vegetation, sheds dwellings and drains etc. There is a risk of vermin being encouraged with a food supply and warmth. So you have to be very attentive , as much as you would growing plants from seeds or caring for plants in the garden.I've had composters and compost heaps for a very long time but have found that it is not terribly good in the small garden of our smallish terraced house. It's got a bit smelly, has had wild bees, rats and huge amounts of wood lice and the last straw was fleas which infested both ours and our neighbours pets and homes so collectively we all disguarded composting in the autumn of 2012 and the problems have since dispersed. So whilst a little disappointed in quitting the DIY composting, I have switched to acquiring certified compost and have had good results and no problems. So would love to know if the free offer complies.
