Hammersmith & West London College Girls Dominate National Competition
Two students have beaten off aspiring hair stylists from across the UK to become first and second respectively in the 2007 Afro Hair & Beauty College Stylist of the Year.
Tigist Afework and Tanisha Siyum, both NVQ Level 2 Afro Specialist students at Hammersmith & West London College, impressed judges from within the industry with their creativity and professionalism throughout the competition.
Competing against equally competitive hairdressing students didn’t put them off and Tigist’s wedding style scooped first prize, with Tanisha picking up a very respectable second place in the funky section. The annual event is organised by the Afro Hair & Beauty Magazine and aims to find the best in hairdressing talent.
Speaking about her win, Tigist said “I entered the College Freestyle section and was only allotted 30 minutes to complete the style. I really enjoyed competing and managed to finish well inside the time. I was judged on my technique and overall performance on the stage so I’m very proud of what I have achieved.“
Commenting on the competition, Tanisha said “At first I was really nervous, but as I got going I really enjoyed it. I’d like to thank my tutor Debbie for entering me and giving me the motivation and confidence to take part.”
Hammersmith & West London College is the only college in the country to offer a specialist Afro Hairdressing qualification, with students competing every year for recognition of their talents. This, however, is the first year that the College has picked up a first and second prize in one go - their best awards yet!
Speaking about her students’ achievements, tutor Debbie Richardson, an Afro hair Stylist winner herself, said “I could see Tigist’s potential from the beginning of the course, her practical skills are second to none. I only ever have to show her something once and she picks it up straightaway. Tanisha has great talents too and is destined to become a very good hairdresser. I’m very proud of them both – they have shown great creativity and are a real credit the College.”
Hammersmith & West London College will be offering the first ever Level 3 qualification in specialising in Afro Hair. Students on this course will be able to learn about afro fashion cuts and the complicated extension work traditionally associated with afro styles. Courses are run by industry professionals and ensure that students are work-ready once they have completed the programme.
