An extensive private collection of antiques and vintage collectables originally assembled as props for film, television and theatre productions are to be sold by High Road Auctions in July. The Pictures Props Company Ltd, based in North Acton, collected approximately 20,000 items over a thirty five year period and gained a reputation as the best source for authentic period pieces within the industry. The collection is vast and includes antique paintings, contemporary prints, posters, advertising memorabilia, furniture, bronzes, ceramics and other unique interiors pieces.
“The collection represents a lifetime’s passion for art and antiques and is a huge find of unique items, so we are naturally delighted to be able to share it with a wider audience” valuer Andrew Polnik says of the sale. “In keeping with the care and effort with which these items were originally sourced, each lot will be offered without reserve giving other antiques lovers a chance to pick up something special at an excellent price. With lots starting at £10, there is certainly something for everyone.”
Collector Hazel Peiser, Managing Director of the Pictures Props Company Ltd, studied at St Martins School of Art before entering the film industry as a Production Designer and Director. Hazel established the company in 1977 with the aim of providing a single source of authentic period props. Over the years, Hazel purchased the majority of these items from auction houses and shops both in the UK and internationally. A long-time local resident, Hazel also owns gallery and gift shop ‘Frivoli’ in Devonshire Road, Chiswick.
The extensive collection has been stored within a West London warehouse for the past few decades, beautifully preserved in time and unseen by the public. Andrew Polnik, says, ‘It was thrilling seeing the collection for the first time as it is a real Aladdin’s cave of beautiful and collectable items that will be of great interest to everyone whether they are collectors of art and antiques, home owners looking for something special or those eager to get their hands on a piece of film, TV or theatre history.”
The majority of the four sales consist of decorative 18th and 19th century paintings and prints, signed contemporary limited edition proofs and advertising memorabilia, supported by a collection of sculptural items and collectables.
Items from the collection have featured in a host of film and television productions; a list of highlights include recent films such as The Iron Lady, The Inbetweeners Film and Pirates of the Caribbean. Television credits include the biggest names on the small screen - Downton Abbey, Mr Selfridge, Poirot and Lewis together with BC classics such as Parade’s End, Waking the Dead, Cranford and Eastenders.
The huge size of the collection means it is difficult to attribute each item to the number of productions it has featured in, however some items can be clearly identified. These include a large modernist abstract oil on canvas entitled ‘A Little Bit of Blue in Everyone’ by Dilwyn Smith, RCA, (170 x 172 cm, estimate £300-600) which was previously filmed in Dr Who in February 2013. A small pair of gothic style 19th century portraits were also recently used in Johnny Depp’s vampire film ‘Dark Shadows’ (24 x 38 cm, estimate £250 – 350) and several modernist oils on board featured in 2011 film Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy (92 x 124, estimate £300 – 500). Even the smaller items featured in productions including paperweights from James Bond film Quantum of Solace. Film and television buffs are more than welcome to come along and identify the rest! Certificates will be available for each purchase confirming their origin from the collection.
The collection will be offered for sale by High Road Auctions in four auctions within a single week in July. The auctions will be held on Sunday 7th, Tuesday 9th, Thursday 11th and Sunday 14th July at Hammersmith Town Hall, King Street, London W6 9JU.
