Visualisation of how the plaque would look from the planning application
October 22, 2023
Permission is being sought to install a plaque marking the spot at which the foundation of Brentford Football Club occurred.
In October 1889 at, what was then the Oxford and Cambridge Public House and Hotel, it was resolved at a meeting of Brentford Rowing Club that the football club should be formed to utilise a new recreation ground for sporting purposes.
The site was just to the west of Kew Bridge and the plaque would be placed between the former premises of Hammonds and The Stable pizzeria.
The commemorative plaque which is 60cm high and 40cm wide would be set on a stone pillar which forms part of the structure of the block of flats.
The application (P/2023/2983) is being made on behalf of Brentford Football Community Society Limited.
It states that the residents’ association for the block of flats is supportive of the proposal and that a meeting of the association on 6 June, the Chair James Richardson, recorded that support and the minutes have been shared with the freeholder of the building.
Brentford FC joined the Football League, with permission granted by the Football Association, on 10 July 1920, with their first league match taking place on Saturday 28 August 1920 at Exeter City.
