If the Lionesses looked out of their window on the flight home from Australia, they may have seen a message from Actonians Ladies' FC.
Players at the club on Gunnersbury Drive, under the Heathrow flight path, had marked out the word ‘PROUD’ on their pitch using 1,000 footballs for the England team’s return early on Tuesday morning (22 August).
The local footballers wanted to express their gratitude for what the Lionesses had achieved in the tournament despite them losing out 1-0 to Spain in the final.
One of the Actonians said, “Seeing the Lionesses and seeing everyone watching them and being proud of them it made me feel more confident in playing football as a girl and wanting to do more to help football grow.”

Actonians has received National Lottery funding which has enabled it to have more than 250 women and girls training and playing on a regular basis.
The club saw a surge of interest following the success of the national women’s team in the Euros and it is hopeful that their recent efforts will see more women and girls seeking to participate.
