Local area has major part to play in 2012 Olympics
Voluntary organisations, community groups and businesses from across west London will displayed their commitment to supporting the 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games at a special conference held on Tuesday 28th February.
The West London Conference, organised by the West London Alliance (WLA), aims to ensure residents in the west of the capital gain from London hosting the Games.
Local Councillor and Chair of the ALG All-Party Working Group on Olympic issues, Ruth Cadbury said “What this event shows is the interest and support across all of London. The Olympics will have a beneficial affect on the whole of the capital, with many positive schemes including schools and business initiatives, community participation in sport, and the volunteering programme, as well as promoting a great sense of pride in the city.”
The aim of the conference, at which members were addressed by Rt Hon Richard Caborn MP, Minister of State, Department of Culture, Media and Sport, is to encourage support for the Games and develop an action plan to take west London’s contribution forward.
Although the main focus of the Games will be on the new Olympic stadium and park in the Lea Valley, the WLP believes the west has a major part to play. Cllr Ann John, Chair of the West London Alliance said “West London is wholly supportive of the London Games 2012, which will bring lasting benefits, not just for sports, but for communities and businesses. We believe that with our commitment and contribution west London can make the Games an even better sporting and cultural event.
“West London was the first to publish proposals showing how our residents and businesses could support the Games and gain from business opportunities, jobs, volunteering, tourism and greater participation in sports. This conference brings together all those with a common interest to sign up support and allow them to become part of our action programme. We want to make sure all Londoners win from hosting the Games”.
