Get your orders in now before September deadline
The Woodland Trust is giving away free packs of native British trees to schools and communities.
The deadline for ordering trees is September 13, so anyone wishing to apply for a pack needs to get their order in quickly.
The Trust has already sent 208 packs of trees to London since Autumn 2010; that's 40,365 trees planted here.
Community groups such as parish councils, sports clubs, Brownies, Scouts and many more can apply for packs of either a small pack (30 trees), medium pack (105 trees), or a large pack (420 trees).
Schools are automatically eligible for free packs of 30 trees, in either a 'hedge' or 'copse' theme, but can apply to be considered for the medium and large packs if they wish. Schools and communities applying for the medium and large tree packs can choose from five themes – containing trees ideal for wildlife, year-round colour, future firewood, wild harvest, or wetlands.
The UK is one of the least wooded countries in Europe, with just 13% woodland compared to 44% on the continent, and the Woodland Trust wants to double this by helping people plant trees.
Beverley Gormley, the Trust's tree packs project manager, said:
"This really is a fantastic way for people to make their mark on their local area and improve it for generations to come. In just ten years, the trees will be taller than the average person, and people in those areas will have more beautiful, natural-looking areas to live, play and work in. Planting trees in school grounds and in community areas - and getting children involved in the tree-planting - will really help youngsters learn about the value of nature, which will be so important when they grow up.”
