Funds sought for refurbishment of Gunnersbury Museum

Hounslow Council has submitted a bid to the Heritage Lottery Fund (HLF) to refurbish Gunnersbury Museum as part of plans to regenerate Gunnersbury Park.

If successful, the bid will see the museum, based in the Large Mansion in Gunnersbury Park, restored as an improved visitor experience for culture and learning.

The bid is the second to be made as part of plans to regenerate Gunnersbury Park. The first sought funding to improve the key heritage attractions of the park, and included plans to restore listed buildings and landscape features such as the Orangery and Temple, and facilities such as the boating lake and café.

Mike Jordan, director of environment at the council, said:

“Gunnersbury Park is a unique asset and we are determined to see its value and heritage are not lost to future generations.

“This bid is a key part of our plans to regenerate the park, as we simply do not have the resources necessary to carry out the work ourselves.

“Central to the bid is the aim to improve the management of the park by strengthening links with the local community to encourage people to value the park’s heritage, and improve opportunities for learning, participation and volunteering.”

The council has been working with Ealing Council and English Heritage to regenerate the park, and a masterplan has been put together setting out how this will be achieved.

The first phase consists of the two bids to the HLF which will see significant investment in the park and its assets.

Phase 2 is the refurbishment of other listed buildings not included in the first phase, including the Small Mansion and stables. The third phase will see the remaining buildings and parkland refurbished.
