Update On Gunnersbury Restoration Project

Third phase of scheme due to be completed this March

An update on the restoration projects at Gunnersbury Park and Museum will be held on 13 March 7.30 p.m. at the Watermans Arts Centre in Brentford.

With two major pop festivals amongst the events scheduled for this summer, the third phase of the project is coming onstream in late March.

Hopes that Gunnersbury Park Museum might reopen in time for the Easter holiday have been dashed with completion now expected to take place in May or later.

The information was shared with the Friends of Gunnersbury Park and Museum during a recent Joint Advisory Panel meeting with David Stockdale, Hounslow’s Heritage & Arts Manager, and David Bowler, Chief Executive of the Gunnersbury Community Interest Company (CIC). You can read more in our story.

The invitation to the public meeting reads, "We will be holding a public update evening, where key officers from both Ealing and Hounslow will present updates on the Phase 1 (Large Mansion & Park) and Phase 3 (Sports) elements of the project masterplan.

"With the Phase 1 construction works nearing the end, Gunnersbury Park and its Large Mansion has been transformed, with the official opening to members of the public scheduled for late June this year. It has been quite a journey that will now see the start of the Phase 3 construction works unfolding onsite in late March.""

A series of events planned for Gunnersbury Park this summer include two major pop festivals which are expected to attract crowds of up to 40,000 and an immersive cinema event.

The Lovebox and Citadel festivals will run on consecutive days from 13 July-15 July from noon to 10.30pm. The two festivals have been held in Victoria Park, Tower Hamlets for the last ten years but lost the contract to hold events in the area when another event bid for it promising more community engagement.

The indications are that the London Mela which has been held in the park on and off for many years will not be taking place in Gunnersbury Park this year.

An immersive cinema event led by the Secret Group is proposed Gunnersbury Park for 47 days. Planning permission will have to be sought for the work they propose to do in the park which is scheduled to take place after the two pop festivals.

Some local residents have expressed concerns about the disruption and damage to the park that may be done during the events as well as the lack of access while they are taking place.
