Drivers using the A4 Great West Road in west London are being advised to plan ahead this weekend and next, as a series of overnight closures will be in place to allow essential inspections of the M4 elevated section.

Connect Plus Services, working on behalf of National Highways and Connect Plus, will carry out structural inspections beneath the M4 viaduct on Saturday 7 February, Sunday 8 February, and again from 13 to 15 February. The work forms part of the ongoing maintenance of the M25 network and its connecting routes, including the M4 corridor through west London.

To provide safe access for engineers, the A4 will be closed overnight between 8pm and 5am while elevated working platforms are positioned beneath the structure. The inspections will give teams up‑to‑date information on the condition of the viaduct.

On Saturday night, the A4 will be closed eastbound between Ealing Road and the Chiswick Roundabout. Buses will be escorted through the closure, but all other traffic will need to follow signed diversion routes.

Eastbound drivers will be diverted via the B455 Ealing Road southbound and the A315 High Street eastbound to reach the Chiswick Roundabout.

Local diversions will also be in place: Lionel Road North traffic will be routed via the B4491 Popes Lane and the B455 Ealing Road, while Clayponds Avenue traffic will be diverted via Chestnut Avenue and the B455 Ealing Road.

On Sunday night, the A4 will be closed westbound between the Chiswick Roundabout and Ealing Road. As on the previous night, buses will be escorted through the closure.

All other westbound traffic, including vehicles heading for the M4, will be diverted to M4 junction 1, the Chiswick Roundabout, the A315 High Street westbound and the B455 Ealing Road northbound.

Three additional overnight closures will be required to complete the inspection programme on Friday 13, Saturday 14 and Sunday 15 February.

Full details of these closures will be confirmed in due course.

The 50-year-old elevated section of the M4 carries tens-of-thousands of journeys in and out of west London every day and helps keep motorway traffic separate from local roads. Highways England is repairing some of the reinforced concrete pillars which support the structure from the A4 Great West Road’s central reservation. It will need to continue this work periodically over the coming years.
