Read Easy Ealing was established in April 21 to provide free one-to-one reading coaching to adults in the area who struggle to read.
We are passionate about helping individuals to learn to read and develop, improving their quality of life and giving them a better chance of more work opportunities. Reading is a basic skill that many of us take for granted but imagine not being able to read a storybook to your children, or struggling to understand labels in the supermarket, or being unable to understand important communications or information.
More than 14,000 people around the Ealing area struggle with reading. We’re here to help.
Learning to read can really help people with every aspect of their lives (and those of their families), from managing everyday tasks to gaining qualifications that can help them get on in the world. Being unable to read can result in severe lifetime complications, lack of self-esteem, increased social isolation, mental health issues and reduced quality of life.
We carefully match each Reader with a suitable trained, volunteer Coach. The pair meet for 30 minutes, twice a week, in an approved, local, public venue (in a private space), and work through a phonics-based workbook programme, Turning Pages (developed for adults by the Shannon Trust charity). This programme takes around 18 to 24 months to complete, by which time the Reader will have built up confidence and acquired the skills they need to move on further with their reading and learning. The Turning Pages programme also includes age-appropriate books that can be read for meaning and pleasure.
We now have circa 40 Reader/Coach pairs working together around the Ealing area. Our Coaches are supported by trained coordinators and a special educational needs professional who can advise on additional useful materials and techniques as well as general coaching issues. We also run very popular regular training workshops for Coaches, helping to create a support network and community of coaches.
