A316 to Be Closed This Saturday for Rugby Event

First of series of closures relating to the World Cup

Significant traffic disruption in the local area is likely this Saturday afternoon and evening due to the planned closure of the A316 near Twickenham stadium.

The first of the QBE International rugby matches taking place this Saturday (15 August) between England and France and it is being used as a test event ahead of Rugby World Cup 2015 later in the year.

Hounslow Council is urging residents and local businesses to make sure they are up to speed on the traffic and transport changes that have been put in place.

The transport arrangements for Twickenham will be different to typical match days. In particular, the A316 Chertsey Road between London Road and Hospital Bridge Road will close for seven hours - three hours before, during the match and two after - to accommodate additional bus services and managed access for local residents and businesses. Advanced warning signs on this busy through-road have been used to remind regular users to plan ahead and use alternative routes.

In addition, it will be residents’ vehicle access only in a number of roads immediately around the stadium, most notably in Rugby Road, Mogden Lane and part of Whitton Dene north of the A316, and in roads around Twickenham train station.

Residents have been issued with access permits for the match days to allow them to come and go more easily, but non-residents are asked to avoid driving in this area at busy times to reduce the chance of congestion.

Leader of Hounslow Council, Councillor Steve Curran, said: “The QBE International matches and Rugby World Cup 2015 will make Hounslow a brilliant place to be for the next few months, but we’re asking residents to plan how they will get around now and to tip off friends and relatives who may be visiting during this period so that the party mood isn’t spoiled.”
