Gumley House become first borough school to break the 90% barrier
Another week of exam results brought even more success to Hounslow’s schools as more than 2,600 students across the borough found out their GCSE results on Thursday 23rd August.
A record breaking 65.8 per cent of students received five of more A* to C grades in their GCSE’s, compared to 63.1 per cent last year. This is higher than the national average where 63.3 percent of students achieved of more A* to C’s, up from 62.4 per cent last year.
Another record fell with the proportion of pupils gaining five of more A* to C grades including English and maths rising to 51.5 per cent from 50.9 per cent last year.
Congratulating them on their success Cllr Dr Robert Kinghorn, Executive Member for Education and Children at Hounslow Council, said, “Exceptional results like this don’t just happen by themselves, so I’d like to congratulate students, teachers and support staff for the hard work they have put in to achieve these results.
“It’s also encouraging to see that so many of these successes include good grades in English and Maths, which give provide a solid foundation for the future.
“Among the many successes, there will be a small number of students who will not have done as well. These should not be forgotten, and I’d like to remind them that the door to education and training is not closed.
“Hounslow Connexions provide an excellent service for all young people - whatever their situation - to get the information and advice they need to make the right choices to get on in life, and I would urge anyone who is unsure about what to do next to contact them.”
Judith Pettersen, Director of Children’s Services at the Council, said, “These results are a phenomenal achievement for a borough like Hounslow and I am delighted that our young people and schools have, once again, shown us all how good they really are. Many congratulations to them, and to all those who have been successful in equivalent courses.
“It’s clear that local parents don’t need to look further than their local school to get an excellent education for their children, and provide them with the best possible start in life.
“I would particularly like to congratulate Gumley House School for becoming the first school in the borough to break through the 90 per cent barrier.”
Gumley House Headteacher, Sister Brenda Wallace said, "I think these results are outstanding! Up again on last year and our best ever. They pay tribute to everyone's hard work and love of learning- staff and students. It is very encouraging to know that these students were also very involved in so many extra curricular activities. I feel very proud to be their Headteacher. The names of girls who achieved very highly are: 12 A*/A - Stephanie De Souza, Victoria Dulko; 11 A*/A - Helen Timpson; 10 A*/A - Ailish Coghlan, Natalie McGuigan, Catriona Sibthorp, Laela Stokes, Grace Watts, Stephanie Whyms."

Students who may not have done as well as they hoped and need advice on what to do next can take get help from the council’s Connexions service. Personal advisers can help explain the options available, and help make sure they have enough information to make a decision.
Anyone who wants advice can visit The Attic, the drop-in centre based in Hounslow Library in the Treaty Centre, where personal advisers will be able to help. Advisers are also available at the new Connexions centres at Brentford School for Girls and Feltham Community College.
