Local Schools Excel Again at GCSEs

The Green School delivers record breaking performance

Local schools have delivered and excellent set of GCSE results again this year despite a national decline in the average pass rate.

Students across the borough have maintained the same level of performance as last year. 63% gained grades A*-C including English and Maths, which is well above the most recent available national average figures (2011).

Arguably the most notable result from the area came from The Green School for Girls which secured a remarkable 50% of all entries at grade A* or A. 23 students at the Green School achieved six or more A*s, of which six achieved as many as 10 A* (or equivalent) grades.  13 students achieved A* or A in all of their subjects.

St Marks Catholic School recorded an impressive 80% A*-C including English and Maths not far behind was Gunnersbury Catholic School  with 75%. Eric Addy and Peter Rutzler at St Mark’s Catholic School each achieved ten A* grades.  Bethany Ames, Ella Whiddet and Nahom Yocob Yemane gained nine A* grades.

Hounslow Manor School attained its best ever results to show a 6% increase which represents a significant and continuing improvement.

Alongside their GCSEs, large numbers of pupils have achieved outstanding results in equivalent vocational qualifications.

At Brentford School for Girls, which maintained its strong performance at GCSE, 36 pupils achieved the highest grade (distinction*) in their vocational qualification, with another 42 achieving distinctions or merits.

Marais Leenders, Headteacher at Brentford School for Girls said, "Another splendid set of results this year. The improvement in results for foundation subjects has been particularly pleasing. Some disappointment around English Language results, lets hope they get things right in the future."

Top performers at Isleworth and Syon School for Boys include Jay Polley (9.5A*, 1A, 1B) and Daniel Norris (6.5A*, 3A, 3B). The school also had excellent science results with an unprecedented 49 A* grades awarded to students.

At Chiswick School, which also maintained a strong GCSE performance, 81 pupils achieved a Distinction* or Distinction in their vocational programmes. In GCSEs Milly Asquith achieved 5 A*s and 7 As; Rajah Nuttaki and Zaki Reddings achieved 6A*s and 6 As.  Athena Rees and Luisa Charles achieved 11A*s or As, Ruth Clark Wilkins achieved 10, and five pupils achieved 9 A*s and As. Chiswick School students also achieved 18 distinction*, 63 distinctions and 131 merits in vocational (BTEC or OCR) performance.

Cllr Steve Curran, Hounslow’s cabinet member for education, said: “In spite of the apparent government pressure to apply new rigour to GCSE marking this has been another very good year for Hounslow students and I am delighted that standards have been maintained.

“I agree with the Association of Directors of Children’s Services that the reported differences in grade boundaries in English are very concerning, and there must be an investigation to see if there is any substance to these concerns. Some of our school results have been affected more than others but the fact that most of our schools achieved a 100% pass rate is a testament to the hard work of our students.”

Judith Pettersen, Director of Children’s Services at Hounslow Council, added: “This is an excellent set of results. Our young people can be very proud of their GCSE and vocational qualification achievements. Hounslow is well served by our secondary schools and it is not surprising that all are currently judged good or outstanding by Ofsted.   My congratulations go to all the students, their parents, teachers and school governors who have supported them along the way.”
