Hounslow Council planners are recommending that a proposal (P/2023/3942) for a change of use for a ground floor unit at a block of flats near Chiswick Roundabout be approved.

The space at Wheatstone House at 650 Chiswick High Road is currently unoccupied after previous attempts to let it out, including to Kew House School, came to nothing. The unit which covers nearly 5,000 sq ft had previously been advertised at an annual rent of £95,000 plus VAT.

The former telephone exchange next to the Fountain Leisure centre was converted into a block of flats several years ago.

Pearl Design International Ltd applied for permission to convert it into a car showroom. It says it would use the site for design consultancy services and research in association with the display and sale of motor vehicle accessories and high-end motor vehicles.

Three local residents submitted comments about the application making objections ranging from the site being more suited to a grocery store and the nature of the business being incompatible with the council’s climate commitments and promotion of active travel.

The borough planning team concluded that this was an appropriate location for a car showroom and there would be no harm to neighbours’ living conditions or the character and appearance of the site or surrounding area.

The applicant says that the building will not be used to service, repair or wash cars and that future advertisement/planning applications will be made in relation to the exterior of the site.
