Ealing Recycling Rates Fail To Meet Targets

New figures show Ealing Council not doing enough

Over the last two years Ealing Council has failed to meet its recycling rates more times than it has met them.

Ealing's current recycling target is 45% but aims to have 50% of all waste recycled by 2018 - this is the figure that has to be achieved throughout the country by 2020.

However the graph above shows inconsistency and a recent deterioration with some levels (in red) up to 8% below that 50% target.

Ealing Council plan to improve performance by promoting the food waste service and increasing subscribers to the green waste collection service.

The controversial new waste management service will be launched in June, with an alternate fortnightly collection for waste and recycling which the council say will make recyling easier.

Liberal Dem Councillor, Gary Malcolm, who attended a cabinet meeting (report here) where the figures were revealed says the recycling rate is getting worse each quarter in 2015/16.

He says: '' Missing target after target for recycling shows that Labour are not performing. By increasing the charges for the garden waste service, this will not motivate as many people as possible to recycle more."

The Cabinet report also interestingly refers to 'the use of behavioural science to encourage increased participation across all recycling services'

A council spokesperson said: ''We aim to recycle 45% of all our waste in this financial year. Despite being below this overall target in the three months from October to December, we are on track to meet our annual 45% goal by the end of this financial year. We have an even more ambitious target of recycling 50% of our waste by 2018 and expect the new collection service starting in June to help us to reach that by making it even easier for residents to recycle in Ealing.''
