The University of West London is offering a chance to achieve Functional Skills Maths and English qualifications with no course fees payable.

The classes are aimed at people who didn’t take GCSE English and Maths or didn’t achieve the all-important grade C/4, which is often a minimum requirement to access particular jobs and university courses.

UWL is providing a potential solution as Functional Skills Level 2 qualifications are widely accepted as an equivalent of grade C/4 at GCSE and can open doors to new work or study opportunities. Those eligible to join our courses receive tuition and a chance to take the assessments – free of charge.

Skills in English and Maths are widely valued across professional sectors and organisations. Qualifications like Functional Skills can help recipients stand out to potential employers, make a career change, or access university degree courses.

Sara Raybould, Senior Pro Vice-Chancellor for Student Experience at UWL, said, “We’re proud to be able to offer such a great opportunity to the local community.

“People who struggled with Maths and English at school are often more limited in their educational and career choices. We want to help pave the way for people in the local community to access a wider range of prospects.”

Fully funded courses are offered to anyone who:

  • Was aged 19 or above on 31 August 2022.
  • Lives in London (Have Greater London postcode)
  • Is a citizen of the UK or an EEA (European Economic Area) country or has permission granted by the UK government to live in the UK which is not for educational purposes
  • Has permission to live in the UK for at least 12 months from the first day of their course.

Articles such as the one above are integral to what we do. We aim to feature as much as possible on local societies, charities based in the area, fundraising efforts by residents, community-based initiatives and even helping people find missing pets.
