Scheme to tackle litter problem caused by free newspapers
Ealing Council is asking commuters to help keep the borough clean and tidy by using new paper recycling bins being installed at stations.
From Monday 19 September, Ealing Council will be providing bins close to the entrances to tube and rail stations.
Called the Commuter Paper Recycling Scheme, the aim is to reduce paper waste at these sites, which is generated mainly through distribution of free newspapers and magazines, as well as diverting more waste from landfill.
Earl McKenzie, Ealing Council's head of waste and recycling, said: �We are pleased there is plenty of free reading material for commuters, but these newspapers and magazines should not be left lying around. The new recycling bins will help keep the stations and surrounding areas tidy, ensure there is much less paper strewn around and help to increase recycling in the borough.�
The council's contractors, ECT, will empty the bins on a regular basis. Ealing Council is awaiting permission from First Great Western to install a recycling bin at Ealing Broadway station.
