Brentford and Chiswick Local History Society Meeting

Talk to mark 100th anniversary of Thomas Layton's bequest

The next meeting of the Brentford & Chiswick Local History Society will be on 17 October at 7.30pm at the Chsiwick Memorial Club.

The speaker will be Jon Cotton who has spent many years researching Thomas Layton and his collection - Jon ran the West London Archaeological Field Group before moving to the Museum of London from which he recently took early retirement.

The talk marks the 100th anniversary of Layton's bequest of his books, prints and antiquities to form a museum for Brentford. The complexities of his will meant that the Museum never came into being as he wished, but most of the objects from his collection were in Jon Cotton's care at the Museum of London.

Jon will provide a context for Layton's collecting by describing some of the other antiquarian collectors in the London of his day - it promises to be an unusual and fascinating talk. Guests are very welcome to join the members for the lectures.

The Society's talks usually take place on the third Monday of the month. They meet at the Chiswick Memorial Club, Afton House, Bourne Place, Chiswick W4, starting at 7.30pm. Remember that Afton House does not open until 7pm.
