Watermans Christmas show this year is The Enormous Turnip, a veritable vegetable explosion, by Stuff and Nonsense Theatre, an energetic thought provoking company that mixes live music, puppetry and physical performance to create fun filled theatre shows for young children and their families.
This classic Russian fairy tale has been repotted for modern times, and tells the story of Dottie and Raymond Chickweed who live in a tiny house the size of a shed. He wants to travel and she wants to grow vegetables on their allotment. This avid gardening couple decides to comprise and plant one last seed before retiring. But as their turnip grows it threatens their house with disaster! Can anyone help and pull up their Enormous Turnip?
Featuring dancing and singing puppets along with plenty of audience participation, all set in a delightful garden, The Enormous Turnip, is really a progressive story about ‘working together to achieve something that is really too big to manage,’ says director Niki McCretton. This seventy minute show is suitable for seedlings aged 2 – 102 and their families.
“Energetic acting, puppetry and an inventive set from Stuff and Nonsense help to re-pot the much loved tale of the enormous turnip... The story is a simple one, enlivened by charming songs. You’ll leave wishing all cauliflowers could talk.”The Londonist Dec 2011
“Puppetry, live music and good old fashioned charm are sprouting up left, right and centre ... Children’s theatre veterans Stuff and Nonsense have taken the classic tale...and turned it into a jolly two hander full of wry smiles and bendy legs... as wholesome and warming as Dotty Chickweed’s vegetable soup and just as yummy.” The Stage on The Enormous Turnip, 2011
