Yourspace: the perfect time out from tots to teens

Holiday courses in drama as well as weekly morning classes

Next Friday August 16 there will be a very special performance at Ealing’s Questors theatre. The alumni of this year’s Yourspace drama courses (August 11-16) are putting on a show for their friends and families after a fun-filled week learning the dramatic ropes. And they haven’t even started yet!

As one parent said after a previous show: “How you initiated, rehearsed and perfected the performance with so many students of such a wide range of ages and abilities, in only five days, is a mystery. My daughter had a great time and I was thrilled to see her perform at the end of the week."

This year’s themes are 'Summer Holidays' and 'Exploring' and no prior experience is necessary. The week includes drama skills, stagecraft and music. A morning course Yourspace tots, for ages 3-5, runs alongside the Yourspace courses at St Augustine’s Priory.

Faith Murphy , herself a mother of three under-10s, set up Yourspace in 2007 and is Head of Drama at St Augustine’s Priory. A professionally trained actress and director, her skills underpin the Yourspace objectives of everyone achieving their best. "Our daughter thought it was more than amazing! It was the best show she had ever done," explained another parent.

In addition, if you are unlucky enough to miss next week’s course, you no longer have to wait until next Easter. After eight years of successful school holiday drama courses, Yourspace is expanding to include Saturday mornings of drama and dance for 6-18s.

Yourspace is now able to offer 10-week, fun-filled Saturday morning, non-exam courses in drama and/or dance for performance, leading to a show for parents at the end of each term. The venue, as with the Yourspace holiday courses, is Ealing’s historic St Augustine’s Priory set in 13 leafy acres within easy reach of Chiswick, Brentford and Acton.

Boys and girls aged 6-11 and 12-18 can choose either one hour of drama or one hour of dance or combine the two each Saturday from 10-12, leading to a performance that will allow the children to show off their skills. No prior experience is required to join the courses which are led by experienced teachers with professional theatre backgrounds.

Yourspace’s director Faith Murphy explains: “After listening to a lot of requests from parents and participants on our Easter and summer courses I am delighted to be able to offer a year-round version of Yourspace. We have had parents saying they have been persuaded by their children to move their holiday dates so they can attend our summer weeks, so hopefully this will be a bit more convenient!”

Yourspace (9am-5pm) and Yourspace tots (9am-1pm) run August 11-16 at £135-£195 for the week

Yourspace Saturdays start September 13, 2014, for a 10-week course ending November 29. For 6-11s and 12-18s, girls and boys.

Fees: Yourspace Saturdays dance (1 hour) £105 per term, Yourspace Saturdays drama (1 hour) £105 per term, or £195 for both (2 hours 10am -12 noon).
