Record Breaking GCSEs for Local Schools

Hard work pays off as new standards are set

Schools in the area are celebrating after achieving their best ever set of GCSE results.

Delighted students across the borough achieved a 5% rise in grades A*-C, along with a 4% rise in grades A*-C with English and maths.

The figure for pupils gaining five or more A* - C grades in all subjects is 13%, higher than 2010’s national average and 10% higher when English and maths are included.

Among the large number of schools which improved results on last year in the category five A* - C, special mention should be made of Brentford School for Girls which increased its figures by 14% and Chiswick Community School with a rise of 12%.

St Mark’s Catholic School built on last year’s impressive results with 84% of pupils gaining five or more A* - C grades including English and maths. This is a record for Hounslow. It remains the top performing school in the borough ahead of Gunnersbury and Gumley House. At Gumley House Convent School, 40% of all grades were A*/A

In terms of individual performances at Chiswick Community School, Christopher Whitehouse gained 10 A*, 1 A, 1 B, James Carty - 9A*, 1A, 2C, Tiago Cavalcanti - 8A*, 2A, 1B and Rhena Eames, Ben Eklof, and Claudia Gardiner who all achieved at least 7 A* and 3 A grades. Across the borough over eleven hundred and fifty pupils had highly successful outcomes in vocational subjects. Of these, 122 pupils following BTEC courses at The Green School performed exceptionally with over 52% gaining a distinction*, which is at least the equivalent of an A* at GCSE.

Cllr Steve Curran, Hounslow’s cabinet member for education said: "Our pupils can be extremely proud of the results they have achieved, with Hounslow’s teachers, school staff, governors and parents offering terrific support to help our young people onto the next stage of their life. Well done to everyone involved."

Judith Pettersen, director of children’s services and lifelong learning at Hounslow Council said: ""We have fantastic young people in the borough, and congratulations go to all the students who have worked very hard to achieve their goals, along with parents, teachers and school governors. I’m delighted everyone's hard work has paid off."
