Hounslow’s Chief Executive To Retire After 40 years In Public Sector

Mark Gilks steps down from “compelling, unbelievably demanding and highly rewarding" post

Hounslow Council’s Chief Executive, Mark Gilks, is stepping down after nine years at the helm to take well-earned retirement.

With nearly forty years of service in the public sector, including twenty one years as a London Chief Officer and nine years as Hounslow’s Chief Executive, Mark will move on following the May elections.

Mark Gilks said today: “Don't let anyone tell you that local government is boring! It is fascinating, compelling, unbelievably demanding and highly rewarding. I feel fortunate that my time at Hounslow has been characterised by service improvement across all areas, so the list of people to thank is enormous.

“I have a real sense of pride in the services we provide, given our frugal resources. We have four busy months ahead before I retire and I will be calling once again on the staff to rise to the challenge of budgets, elections, inspections, service reviews and even a bit more snow!"

Council leader, Cllr Peter Thompson, responded to the news saying: “As chief executive, Mark has ably steered the borough through periods of significant change using the calmness, thoughtfulness and commonsense that he is renowned for. I am personally grateful for the support and guidance Mark has provided to me as Leader and to fellow members.

“His insight, dedication and experience have made a real difference to local services and the community. I wish Mark every happiness in his retirement.”
