Hounslow Council may introduce 20mph zones to improve safety
Hounslow Council is to discuss plans to introduce 20mph zones around primary schools .
Councillors will be discussing plans next week (Tuesday, 15 January) about investing £250,000 to introduce the 20mph zones on roads around primary schools in order to improve road safety, and provide safer routes to schools.
Cllr Colin Ellar, cabinet member for environment, said:
“We want to make sure children and parents feel safe on their way to and from their local schools, and the 20mph zones already in place have shown that this is a good way of doing this.
“Not only will this reduce accidents, but it should also help encourage parents and children to leave the car at home and make the regular journey on foot or bike, reducing traffic and promoting health.”
There are 56 primary schools in the borough, 13 of which are already in 20mph zones, with another being completed at Wellington Primary School.
If the plans are agreed, the money would be invested in checking the suitability of 20mph zones around the remaining 42 schools. These would then be prioritised for works where the funding allows.
Consultation about any changes would take place in earJanuary 11, 2013ummer holidays.
